Popular Nigerian comedian and BBNaija star DeeOne has swapped the stage for the political arena, clinching the BOOT Party ticket for the Lagos State House of Assembly seat in Ibeju Lekki Constituency 1 following his victory at the party’s primary election.
Announcing his candidacy on Instagram on Wednesday night, DeeOne wasted no time setting himself apart from the typical Nigerian politician.
“I want to thank my party, BOOT Party, for the confidence in voting for me to emerge the winner of the primary election for Ibeju Lekki Constituency 1,” he wrote. “Come 2027, by the grace of God, I will be your worker and not your boss.”
That simple declaration speaks volumes in a political environment where constituents routinely feel abandoned by their representatives after election day.
DeeOne is no stranger to firsts. He became the first comedian to enter the Big Brother Naija House and the first Africa-based comedian to perform at London’s prestigious Comedy Store, sharing a billing with global icons like Chris Rock and Kevin Hart.
He also won the Amstel Malta Showtime competition in 2011 and Alibaba’s Spontaneity competition in 2015, cementing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most respected comedians. That track record of breaking new ground now extends into politics.
The constituency he is targeting is significant. Ibeju Lekki is one of Lagos State’s most rapidly developing corridors, home to major industrial and real estate investments that make quality representation a matter of direct economic consequence for residents.
DeeOne will face stiff competition from incumbent APC lawmaker Mojeed Fatai Adebola, who has held the Ibeju Lekki I seat since 2019 and briefly served as Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly in early 2025. Dislodging an APC incumbent in Lagos, the party’s stronghold, is a formidable task by any measure.
Yet DeeOne’s candidacy taps into something real. Across Nigeria, the 2027 election cycle is drawing a new wave of non-traditional candidates who are wagering that public trust and an authentic connection with voters can challenge the grip of established political machinery.
Whether the people of Ibeju Lekki Constituency 1 will back the comedian-turned-politician remains to be seen, but DeeOne has clearly signaled that he is in this race to be taken seriously.
