Media entrepreneur and publisher, Dele Momodu, has dismissed rumours linking him to a possible vice-presidential ticket alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, insisting that he has no intention of contesting for elective office again.

Momodu made the clarification on Thursday through a post on social media, describing the widely circulated speculation as a deliberate attempt to distract political stakeholders. He urged his supporters, associates, and members of his political camp to ignore the reports.

“When I first received this poster from a friend, I dismissed it as a joke designed to distract us… I will be most grateful if my friends and party members can do me the honour of ignoring this joke,” he stated.

The Ovation magazine publisher stressed that he has completely ruled out any future electoral ambition, making it clear that his current political focus is on supporting efforts to build a united opposition front ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I’m not running for any race again. I’m interested in humbly supporting the coalition of political parties, to work together and oust the incompetent APC government,” he added.

Momodu explained that his role in the political process moving forward would centre on helping to strengthen collaboration among opposition parties rather than seeking office for himself. According to him, the African Democratic Congress already has enough qualified personalities capable of contesting for top political positions.

He maintained that there are “more than enough leaders” within the party who possess the capacity and experience needed for future electoral contests.

The former presidential aspirant also used the opportunity to address the tone of political discourse surrounding opposition politics, particularly the repeated criticism directed at Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku, Obi in Talks to Join SDP

He reminded critics that Labour Party figure Peter Obi had previously contested as Atiku’s running mate during the 2019 presidential election, urging political actors and supporters to engage in issue-based conversations rather than personal attacks.

Momodu further cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric targeted at political opponents, including President Bola Tinubu, stressing that healthy democratic engagement requires civility and maturity.

He reaffirmed his commitment to supporting whichever candidate eventually emerges from his political platform, insisting that his priority remains the formation of a formidable opposition coalition capable of mounting a strong challenge in 2027.

His statement comes amid growing political realignments and speculation over potential alliances ahead of the next presidential election.

What You Should Know

Dele Momodu has firmly denied reports suggesting he may emerge as a vice-presidential candidate in 2027, stating that he has no plans to contest for any elective office again.

Instead, he says his focus is on supporting opposition coalition-building and strengthening collaboration among political parties ahead of the elections. His remarks come as political realignments continue across Nigeria, with several high-profile figures positioning themselves for future contests.

Momodu’s decision signals his intention to remain active in national politics as a strategist and supporter rather than as a direct participant on the ballot.
