A wave of criticism has erupted across social media after remarks made by the Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, concerning the alleged killing of a suspect by a police officer in Delta State.

During an appearance on Channels Television, Edafe described the incident as one of the most challenging episodes he has encountered since assuming office as police spokesperson in the state.

While addressing the circumstances surrounding the shooting, he noted that although the police institution does not usually explain misconduct through supernatural interpretations, the nature of the case had left him unable to find any rational explanation for the officer’s conduct.

He said, “Since I became Police PRO in Delta State, this Is My Most Difficult Moment. Police Cannot Attribute Problem to Spirituality, But in This Case, Spirituality Is the Only Explanation for What He Did.”

The statement immediately drew widespread reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the framing of the incident and questioning the appropriateness of linking an alleged act of police misconduct to spirituality.

Delta state killing

A significant number of social media users dismissed the explanation outright, arguing that the incident should be approached as a matter of professional misconduct, abuse of authority, and possible criminal wrongdoing rather than through spiritual assumptions.

Several commentators stressed that attributing such a serious allegation to spirituality risks diverting attention from the need for accountability and due process.

Some users also raised concerns about institutional oversight within the police force. One commenter, identified as The Coolest One, questioned whether the command could genuinely guarantee the discipline and professionalism of its officers.

Another user, Oghenekomeno, described the situation as deeply troubling, warning that incidents of this nature further erode public confidence in law enforcement agencies.

Others labelled the comment “reckless” and “disturbing,” insisting that allegations of extrajudicial actions by security operatives should be handled through transparent investigations grounded in facts and evidence.

The controversy has continued to dominate discussions online, with growing calls for a thorough and impartial probe into the alleged killing.

Many Nigerians are also demanding clear communication from the police hierarchy, urging authorities to focus on accountability, professionalism, and justice for all parties involved rather than narratives that may distract from the facts of the case.

The incident has once again reignited broader concerns over police conduct, use of force, and public trust in Nigeria’s security institutions.

What You Should Know

The controversy began after Delta State Police PRO Bright Edafe suggested that “spirituality” might explain an officer’s alleged killing of a suspect.

His comment triggered strong backlash, with many Nigerians insisting that such cases should be treated strictly as matters of misconduct and investigated through legal and institutional channels. Critics argue that invoking spirituality risks shifting focus away from accountability and justice.

The incident has intensified public calls for transparency within the Nigeria Police Force and renewed concerns over extrajudicial actions, professionalism, and trust in law enforcement.

Authorities are now under pressure to ensure a credible investigation and demonstrate commitment to justice and institutional reform.
