Nigeria’s Top Telecom Giant Temporarily Suspends Lending Service

MTN Nigeria, the country’s dominant telecommunications operator, has temporarily suspended its popular Xtratime airtime and data lending service to comply with sweeping new digital lending regulations from the FCCPC.

The company made the announcement in a formal disclosure to the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) on Thursday, April 16, 2026, signed by its Company Secretary, Uto Ukpanah.

“MTN Nigeria Communications PLC hereby notifies the Nigerian Exchange Limited and the investing public that the Company has temporarily suspended its airtime and data credit advance service (‘Xtratime’),” the statement read.

“This relates to the implementation of processes under the Digital, Electronic, Online, or Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Regulations, 2025, which introduced a new compliance and licensing framework for entities providing digital or non-traditional consumer credit services.”

For millions of Nigerian students, small traders, artisans, and low-income earners who often find themselves short on credit at critical moments, Xtratime has long been a lifeline.

The service, accessible via a simple USSD code, allows eligible prepaid subscribers to borrow airtime or mobile data with the promise of repayment on their next recharge. It is one of MTN’s most-used value-added offerings, reflecting the realities of a market where cash flow can be unpredictable and mobile connectivity is essential for everything from banking apps to job searches.

The suspension, while described as temporary, comes as the FCCPC tightens its grip on the booming digital credit sector. Building on an interim framework introduced in 2022, the commission’s 2025 regulations explicitly bring telecom operators offering short-term credit — such as airtime and data advances — under formal licensing and oversight requirements.

Companies must now register with the FCCPC, meet enhanced consumer-protection standards, and obtain approval to continue operations. Transitional arrangements had given provisional players until April 2026 to fully regularize their status or face potential regulatory sanctions.

FCCPC CEO Tunji Bello had earlier described the window as an opportunity “to enable affected operators to take steps towards compliance,” warning that failure to do so could trigger “further regulatory measures, as provided under the law.”

MTN insisted the pause would not materially dent its finances. “Given the scale within the revenue mix, we do not expect the temporary suspension to have a material impact,” the company said, adding that it is closely monitoring customer behavior and usage patterns and will provide updates in its first-quarter 2026 results. Customers can still purchase airtime and data through regular channels, the operator emphasized.

The development underscores a broader regulatory push in Nigeria’s fintech and telecom space. The FCCPC has cited concerns over consumer debt traps, data privacy breaches, aggressive debt-recovery tactics by some digital lenders, and the need for greater transparency in an industry that has grown explosively.

By folding telco credit services into the same regime that governs loan apps and online lenders, the commission aims to create a level playing field and better shield vulnerable users.

Reactions on social media and in local commentary have been swift and largely frustrated, particularly among prepaid users who view the service as an emergency buffer rather than a luxury credit. Some have questioned why a routine telecom feature now requires the same bureaucratic hurdles as full-fledged loan apps, while others see the move as overdue consumer protection in a market long criticized for opaque lending practices.

MTN has not given a firm timeline for Xtratime’s return, only stating that it is working through the necessary compliance steps. Industry watchers expect other major operators offering similar services to follow suit if they have not already begun the registration process.

For now, Nigeria’s 200 million-plus mobile subscribers — many of whom rely on MTN’s network — must adjust to life without one of the simplest credit hacks in their digital toolkit.

Whether the regulatory reset ultimately strengthens consumer trust or simply adds friction to everyday connectivity remains to be seen. MTN, for its part, is betting that full compliance will allow the service to resume stronger — and perhaps fairer — than before.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

MTN Nigeria has temporarily suspended its popular Xtratime airtime and data lending service to fully comply with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC)’s Digital Lending Regulations 2025.

This pause is driven purely by regulatory compliance requirements, not financial or operational issues. The service is expected to return once licensing and consumer protection standards are met, with no material impact on MTN’s overall revenue anticipated.

In short, it’s a regulatory adjustment affecting millions of prepaid users who rely on quick credit access, but normal airtime and data purchases remain unaffected.
