Ogun state Governor Dapo Abiodun has approved a weekly day off duty and a ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance for public servants in Ogun State.

The palliative measures, which will take effect from April 2026, are expected to run for an initial period of three months.

The intervention is aimed at cushioning the impact of rising transportation costs follo
wing the recent increase in the pump price of fuel.

Announcing the development in a statement, the State Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, said the initiative was designed to support workers and improve their overall welfare.

According to him, “the initiative is aimed at alleviating the commuting challenges faced by workers, while also boosting morale and enhancing productivity across the public service.”

Onasanya explained that eligible workers would enjoy one day off per week in addition to receiving the ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance.

He noted that the specific day off for each worker would be determined by Accounting Officers in Ministries, Departments and Agencies to ensure that government operations are not disrupted.

The Head of Service, however, clarified that certain categories of workers would be excluded from the weekly day-off arrangement due to the critical nature of their duties.

“These include medical personnel, judicial officers, teaching and non-teaching staff at all levels of education, security personnel, Accounting Officers, Heads of Departments, as well as other critical duty officers whose presence is indispensable,” he said.

Despite the exemption, he added that all affected workers would still benefit from the ₦10,000 monthly transport allowance.

Onasanya described the policy as a necessary response to prevailing economic realities, commending the governor for prioritising workers’ welfare.

He said the intervention was “timely and compassionate,” noting that it reflects the administration’s commitment to supporting its workforce.

The Head of Service urged public servants to reciprocate the gesture by demonstrating increased dedication and professionalism.

He called for improved discipline and service delivery across the public service, stressing that the government remains committed to maintaining efficiency despite economic pressures.
