In a heartfelt tribute marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, internationally recognized disc jockey and billionaire heiress Florence Otedola, better known by her stage name DJ Cuppy, has declared her enduring commitment to her Nigerian identity, stating she would choose to be born Nigerian again in another lifetime.

The 32-year-old entertainer, daughter of oil magnate Femi Otedola, took to her Instagram page on Wednesday to share an emotional reflection on Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960.

“My home, My country Nigeria is 65 today,” Cuppy wrote to her millions of followers. “Through it all, our people keep pushing, persevering, and finding joy even in the toughest times.”

The DJ’s comments come at a particularly significant moment for Africa’s most populous nation, which continues to grapple with economic challenges, security concerns, and various socio-political issues. Despite these difficulties, Cuppy chose to focus her message on the indomitable spirit that characterizes the Nigerian people.

In what many observers are describing as a powerful statement of national pride, the entertainer attributed Nigerians’ strength to divine providence. “God did not rush when He made us. He gave us resilience, spirit, and endless energy,” she declared, before making her striking pledge: “In my next life, I’d still choose to be Nigerian.”

DJ Cuppy’s statement has resonated with many Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora, sparking conversations about national identity, patriotism, and the complex relationship many citizens have with their homeland. Her words arrive at a time when discussions about migration, brain drain, and national pride dominate public discourse in Nigeria.

The disc jockey, who has built an international career spanning music, philanthropy, and media, has long been vocal about her Nigerian heritage, often incorporating elements of Afrobeats and Nigerian culture into her work while representing the country on global platforms.

As Nigeria marks this milestone anniversary, voices like Cuppy’s serve as reminders of the deep emotional connections many citizens maintain with their country, even amid acknowledged challenges—a testament to the enduring bond between Nigerians and their homeland.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

On Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day, prominent DJ and entertainer Florence “DJ Cuppy” Otedola made a powerful statement of national pride, declaring she would choose to be Nigerian again in her next life.

Her message emphasized the resilience, spirit, and joy of the Nigerian people despite ongoing national challenges—offering a striking counter-narrative to conversations about migration and brain drain.

The statement resonates as a reminder that deep patriotism and love for one’s homeland can coexist with acknowledgment of a nation’s difficulties, particularly coming from a globally recognized figure who could easily distance herself from Nigeria’s struggles but chooses instead to embrace her identity fully.
