Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has been appointed Deputy Director, Security and Intelligence 1, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 election.
The appointment was approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who is the presidential candidate of the ruling party.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, Matawalle will play a key role in the campaign’s security and intelligence operations across the country.
He will coordinate security arrangements for campaign activities and work to protect candidates, campaign officials and supporters.
The former Zamfara State governor will also oversee intelligence gathering and risk assessment as part of efforts to identify possible threats to campaign activities.
Matawalle is expected to work with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to develop measures for dealing with potential security challenges.
He will also coordinate engagements with traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups and women groups to strengthen the security structure of the campaign.
The Ministry of Defence said the appointment was based on Tinubu’s recognition of Matawalle’s experience in public service, security management and political mobilisation.
It added that his experience in handling security challenges, grassroots mobilisation and community-based peace initiatives would be useful in his new role.
Matawalle has also been involved in the implementation of the Tinubu administration’s security programmes, including engagements with security agencies and initiatives focused on the welfare of troops and development of security infrastructure.
Reacting to the appointment, Matawalle thanked President Tinubu and the APC leadership for the confidence placed in him.
He promised to use his experience as a former governor, minister and political leader to support a peaceful, coordinated and successful campaign.
Matawalle said the APC presidential campaign would take the achievements of the Renewed Hope administration to Nigerians across the country.
