Lagos shuts down popular bridge

The Lagos State Government has announced a three-week traffic diversion plan for the rehabilitation of Oke-Afa Bridge in Isolo, with the changes scheduled to begin on Friday, August 28, 2026.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, explaining that the rehabilitation would continue until Friday, September 18.

The project will be carried out in two phases to allow construction work while keeping traffic moving around the busy Isolo-Ejigbo route.

The first phase will run from August 28 to September 11 and will affect the outbound section of the bridge from Isolo towards Ejigbo.

During this period, motorists heading from Isolo to Ejigbo will be diverted onto the Isolo-bound carriageway from Pako Roundabout. Vehicles will move in both directions along the carriageway before returning to the main road at Mobil Filling Station.

Motorists travelling from Ejigbo towards Isolo will continue to use their normal route but will share the carriageway with Ejigbo-bound vehicles between Mobil Filling Station and Pako Roundabout. Normal access will resume after the roundabout.

The second phase will begin on September 12 and end on September 18. It will affect the inbound Isolo section of the bridge for motorists coming from Ejigbo.

Under the second arrangement, vehicles travelling from Ejigbo towards Isolo will be moved onto the Ejigbo-bound carriageway from Mobil Filling Station. Traffic will operate in both directions before rejoining the main carriageway at Pako Roundabout.

Vehicles coming from Isolo will continue to move while sharing the carriageway with Isolo-bound motorists between Pako Roundabout and Mobil Filling Station. Full access will resume after the diversion point.

Osiyemi said parts of the bridge would be temporarily closed to vehicles as the rehabilitation progresses. He appealed to motorists to remain patient and follow instructions from traffic officials during the construction period.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will deploy personnel to manage traffic and reduce possible congestion around the area.

An emergency tow vehicle will also be stationed along the route to quickly remove vehicles that break down and prevent them from causing further obstruction.

The commissioner said the rehabilitation is being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works through the Office of the Federal Controller in Lagos, in partnership with Strabic Construction Limited.

He advised motorists who use the route to plan their journeys ahead and comply with the temporary traffic arrangements throughout the three-week project.

The state government said the diversion plan was designed to allow the bridge rehabilitation to continue while maintaining traffic movement around the Isolo-Ejigbo axis.
