Arsenal suffered a shocking FA Cup quarter-final exit after a 2-1 defeat to Championship side Southampton on Saturday.

Ross Stewart gave Southampton the lead in the first half, and although Viktor Gyokeres equalised for Arsenal, the Premier League leaders were undone late on to crash out of the competition.

The defeat marks only Arsenal’s fifth loss in all competitions this season but represents another missed opportunity to end their six-year wait for silverware. Having already lost the League Cup final to Manchester City, the Gunners have now seen another trophy slip away.

Despite the setback, Arsenal remain strong favourites to win the Premier League, holding a nine-point lead over second-placed City as they chase their first league title since 2004.

However, manager Mikel Arteta will be concerned by his side’s recent dip in form, especially given their history of faltering in crucial moments during title races.

The build-up to the match was overshadowed by the withdrawal of several Arsenal players from international duty due to injuries, raising questions about squad fitness and priorities. Key players like Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice were absent, while others started on the bench.

Arsenal now turn their attention to a crucial Champions League quarter-final clash against Sporting CP, where a strong result will be vital to regain momentum.

While Arsenal reflect on their disappointment, Southampton celebrated one of the most memorable victories in their history. The win comes 50 years after their famous FA Cup triumph over Manchester United in 1976, adding another historic chapter to the club’s legacy.

Southampton, who were relegated from the Premier League last season, produced a spirited performance reminiscent of their best days. Having already stunned Fulham in the previous round, they went a step further by eliminating Arsenal.

The result sends Southampton into the FA Cup semi-finals for the first time since 2021, when they were beaten by Leicester City.

Despite their cup success, Southampton’s main focus remains securing promotion back to the Premier League. They are currently unbeaten in their last 15 matches and sit seventh in the Championship, just outside the play-off spots ahead of a key clash with Wrexham.

On the pitch, Arsenal struggled to assert control, particularly in the first half. Southampton took the lead in the 32nd minute after a quick counter-attack exposed Arsenal’s defence, allowing Stewart to score from close range.

Arsenal responded in the 68th minute when Kai Havertz set up Gyokeres, who finished clinically for his 17th goal of the season.

However, the momentum shifted again after Gabriel Magalhaes was forced off with a knee injury, disrupting Arsenal’s defensive structure.

Southampton capitalised late in the game, with a decisive goal in the 85th minute sealing a famous victory and sparking celebrations at St Mary’s.

What you should know

Arsenal have been knocked out of the FA Cup after a surprise 2-1 loss to Southampton, marking another setback in their pursuit of silverware this season.

Despite leading the Premier League, concerns are growing over their recent form and injury issues.

Southampton, meanwhile, continue their impressive run, reaching the semi-finals and boosting morale as they push for promotion.
