The Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has approved the appointment of Prof. Princewill Chike as the institution’s 10th Vice-Chancellor.
Chike is expected to assume office on July 13, 2026, following the expiration of the tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, on the same date.

The university’s spokesperson, Dr Sam Kpenu, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Friday in Port Harcourt.
Kpenu said the appointment was approved by the university’s 17th Governing Council after the successful completion of the selection process.
According to him, the process was conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the University of Port Harcourt Act.
He explained that a Search Team and a Joint Council-Senate Selection Board were constituted to oversee the exercise in line with existing laws and regulations.
Kpenu added that the committees carried out the selection process according to established procedures for the appointment of vice-chancellors in Nigerian universities.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Sen. Mao Ohuabunwa, congratulated Chike on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to provide visionary leadership for the continued growth and development of the university.
Before his appointment, Chike served as Commissioner for Health in Rivers State during the administration of former Governor Nyesom Wike.
