Nigerian Film Corporation Strongly Debunks Death Hoax Targeting Ali Nuhu

The Nigerian Film Corporation moved swiftly Monday evening to stamp out what it characterized as “malicious and injurious” death rumors targeting its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Ali Nuhu, after false reports spread rapidly across social media platforms.

The controversy began when Facebook user Ifeoma Chigbo posted a video claiming the veteran actor and filmmaker had died, according to multiple sources. The speculation quickly escalated when additional posts emerged alleging that Nuhu had perished in a fatal automobile accident, prompting widespread concern throughout Nigeria’s entertainment community.

Brian Etuk, the corporation’s Director of Public Affairs, issued an unequivocal denial in an official statement released Monday night, describing the circulating reports as entirely fabricated. The statement emphasized that Nuhu is “alive, well, and fully carrying out his responsibilities” as head of the federal film regulatory agency.

The corporation’s response appeared designed to address not only the immediate misinformation but also the broader pattern of celebrity death hoaxes that periodically surface on Nigerian social media. The statement noted that Nuhu was officially appointed to his current position by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on February 12, 2024, underscoring his continued active role in government.

Particularly striking was the NFC’s stern warning regarding potential consequences for those spreading the false information. The agency indicated it was implementing unspecified measures against individuals responsible for propagating the misinformation, suggesting this incident may prompt broader discussions about accountability for online falsehoods affecting public figures.

The rapid spread of the unfounded claims highlights ongoing challenges with information verification in Nigeria’s digital landscape, where celebrity death hoaxes have become an increasingly common phenomenon. The NFC’s forceful response suggests government agencies are becoming more proactive in combating misinformation that affects their personnel and operations.

Ali Nuhu, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s Hausa-language Kannywood film industry before his appointment to the federal position, has not yet issued a personal statement regarding the incident. However, the corporation’s swift institutional response appears to have successfully contained the spread of the false reports.

The incident underscores the delicate balance between rapid information sharing on social media platforms and the verification standards necessary to prevent harmful misinformation from affecting public figures and institutional operations.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The Nigerian Film Corporation has definitively confirmed that its Managing Director, Dr. Ali Nuhu, is alive and well, directly countering false social media reports claiming he died in a car crash.

The agency is now pursuing action against those who spread the misinformation, highlighting the serious consequences of sharing unverified celebrity death rumors online. This incident serves as a stark reminder to verify information before sharing, as such hoaxes can cause real harm to individuals and institutions.
