Joshua Shakes Off Two Knockdowns, Knocks Out Prenga

Anthony Joshua stood in the ring at the Jeddah Superdome on Saturday night. He reminded the world why he remains one of heavyweight boxing’s most compelling figures, not for the ease of his victory but for how narrowly it eluded him before he seized it back.

The “darkest moment” referenced isn’t a fight at all. Joshua was a passenger in a fatal car crash near Lagos, Nigeria, that killed two of his team members and close friends, Sina Ghami and Latif “Latz” Ayodele, on December 29, 2025, just ten days after he had knocked out YouTube-star-turned-boxer Jake Paul in Miami.

Joshua grieved and mourned in private, with promoter Eddie Hearn saying he would give his fighter space to return only when he was truly ready. It took Joshua seven months to get back in the ring.

That return very nearly went wrong in spectacular fashion. Just 19 seconds into the first round, Kristian Prenga caught Joshua cold with a right uppercut and dropped him.

The Albanian pressed his advantage with a barrage of blows later in the round, sending Joshua to the canvas a second time and forcing the referee into a second standing count. For a few chaotic minutes, the script threatened to flip the comeback fight entirely, becoming an upset for the ages.

But Joshua weathered the storm. He regained his composure in the second round and turned the fight decisively in his favor, stopping Prenga via knockout at 2:43 of round two. The win improves Joshua’s record to 30-4, while Prenga, whose stock arguably rose in defeat, falls to 20-2.

The stakes went well beyond pride. A convincing performance was paramount for Joshua’s career trajectory, with his long-anticipated superfight against Tyson Fury hanging in the balance.

Fury had already done his part a night earlier, dispatching Mariusz Wach with a seventh-round TKO, meaning Joshua’s task on Saturday was not to slip up. Now, with both men delivering, however untidily in Joshua’s case, the long-elusive Fury-Joshua showdown is reportedly all but confirmed.

The card itself carried significant undertones for the Saudi-backed boxing calendar, headlining a major event that also featured WBO super middleweight and IBF junior middleweight title fights.

But it was Joshua’s night that will be remembered not for a routine demolition but for a heavyweight legend once again proving, quite literally on the canvas, that he can be hurt and buckled and still find a way to win.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Anthony Joshua’s win over Kristian Prenga in Jeddah was never really about the scoreline; it was about resilience. Seven months after surviving a fatal car crash that killed two close friends, Joshua got dropped twice in the opening round, then dug deep to stop Prenga in round two.

The takeaway isn’t the knockout itself but that Joshua proved he could absorb real adversity, both emotional and physical, and still come out on top, keeping his blockbuster showdown with Tyson Fury on track.
