The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise by two weeks.
The registration, which was originally scheduled to end on July 10, will now close on Friday, July 24, 2026.
The announcement was made on Friday night in Abuja by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.
According to Haruna, the decision followed a review of the registration exercise and feedback from INEC state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.
He explained that the CVR exercise, which began on August 18, 2025, was extended to give eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered another opportunity to do so ahead of future elections.
The commission said the extension demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters.
INEC also announced the introduction of a self-service online voter registration option for eligible first-time voters.
According to the commission, the new service will be available from Wednesday, July 8, 2026, through its dedicated CVR portal, where users will find a step-by-step guide to complete the process.
INEC said the self-service option will allow eligible Nigerians to begin and complete their voter registration, including biometric capture, using their personal devices without visiting an INEC office.
The commission added that the system includes identity verification, biometric validation and other security checks to ensure the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.
INEC urged all eligible Nigerians who have not yet registered to take advantage of the extended registration period and make use of the new online registration technology.
The commission also reaffirmed its commitment to providing a credible, inclusive and accessible voter registration process through the use of technology to improve the electoral experience for citizens.
