Three political parties have agreed to work together to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.

The parties are the Accord Party, African Action Congress (AAC) and Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Their presidential candidates, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim of the Accord Party, Omoyele Sowore of the AAC and Adewole Adebayo of the SDP, reached the agreement after a meeting in Port Harcourt.

According to a statement by the Accord Party Media Office, the candidates met during the weekend to discuss Nigeria’s democracy, economy and security.

The parties said the proposed alliance is aimed at providing Nigerians with a credible alternative based on democratic accountability, economic justice, security, institutional reforms, social inclusion and national development.

They also agreed to continue discussions with other presidential candidates, political parties, organised labour, civil society organisations, professional groups, youth and women’s organisations, traditional institutions and religious bodies.

“The 2027 election must be a genuine contest over Nigeria’s future, rather than a predetermined political coronation. Nigeria belongs to its people. Political power belongs to the people. The ballot belongs to the people,” they stated.

The three presidential candidates agreed to combine their political strength and present Nigerians with a joint democratic alternative in the 2027 election.

They said further consultations would determine the structure of the alliance, how it would operate and who would emerge as its presidential candidate.

“Nigeria’s multi-party democracy must be preserved. No individual, political party, security agency, electoral official or institution is bigger than the Nigerian Constitution,” they declared.

The Movement for Democratic Renewal (MDR) was later launched for the South-South and South-East regions, with speakers calling for unity to bring about political change in the country.
