The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has closed its Situation Room after the conclusion of the 2026 Osun State Governorship Election.
INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, announced the closure after Governor Ademola Adeleke was declared the winner of the election.
The Situation Room served as a central monitoring and oversight centre during the Osun governorship election.
Adeleke, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), won the election with 511,067 votes.
His closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), scored 444,815 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam, came third with 17,180 votes.
The election featured candidates from 15 political parties.
Amupitan said the closure of the Situation Room followed the “successful conclusion” of Saturday’s election and the declaration of the result in the early hours of Sunday, August 16, 2026.
The INEC chairman thanked the commission’s staff for their dedication, sacrifice and professionalism during the election.
He praised workers at the commission’s headquarters, Osun State and local government offices, as well as those deployed to polling units and technical teams.
Amupitan also noted that many INEC workers sacrificed time with their families and worked under difficult conditions to ensure the successful conduct of the election and protect the integrity of the electoral process.
He said the lessons learnt from the election would help the commission prepare for the 2027 General Election.
The INEC chairman also restated the commission’s commitment to professionalism, transparency and neutrality in carrying out its duties.
He urged INEC staff to remain dedicated to their work and understand the important role the commission plays in protecting Nigeria’s democracy.
“Let us learn from our experience, refine our strategies and approach the upcoming national task with renewed vigour and absolute neutrality. Let us remain steadfast in our duty, knowing that we are the gatekeepers of our nation’s democracy,” Amupitan said.
