Gunmen Kill Retired OGTV Broadcaster, Security Guard

A community along the Abeokuta–Siun–Sagamu Expressway woke to tragedy on Sunday after gunmen stormed the residence of a retired Ogun State Television (OGTV) presenter, killing her and her security guard in what police have described as a suspected armed robbery or targeted home invasion.

The victim, Mrs. Kitan Oyesiku, fondly remembered across Ogun’s media circles as “Aunty Kitan,” spent years on air at the state-owned broadcaster before her retirement, building a following that made her a familiar face and voice to viewers long after she left the screen. Her killing, alongside that of the guard posted at her gate, has left colleagues, neighbors, and former viewers reeling.

The attack unfolded at the deceased’s home in the Agodo community, a settlement strung along the busy expressway linking Abeokuta to Sagamu via Siun. Details of exactly when the gunmen struck remain unclear, but the alarm was not raised by police patrols or passers-by; it came from her own church family.

Worshippers who noticed her absence from service reportedly went to check on her, fearing something was amiss.

What they found instead confirmed the worst: her guard’s body at the security post and Mrs. Oyesiku’s body inside her apartment. It was the congregants, according to a source close to the investigation, who first sounded the alarm that drew neighbors and, eventually, police to the scene.

The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the deaths. Command spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi said the matter was first reported at the Owode Egba Police Division by a resident of the nearby Iyana Agodo village, who had raised concerns over suspicious activity at the property.

Detectives dispatched to the scene found indications consistent with forced entry and a struggle, police said. A search of the compound turned up the guard’s body at his post, while Mrs. Oyesiku was found dead inside the house.

Investigators also noted that her car was missing from the premises, a detail that may point investigators toward robbery as a motive, though no arrests or suspects have so far been announced.

Command Commissioner CP Bode Ojajuni has ordered what police describe as a comprehensive investigation, with surveillance and intelligence-led operations now expanded across the area in an effort to track down those responsible.

In a statement issued Sunday, the command extended condolences to Mrs. Oyesiku’s family, the OGTV community, and Ogun’s wider media fraternity, while appealing to residents to remain calm and come forward with any information that could aid the probe.

The bodies of Mrs. Oyesiku and her guard have since been deposited at the morgue of the State Hospital, Ijaiye, Abeokuta, pending autopsy and release to their families.

News of the killing spread quickly through Ogun’s broadcast and journalism circles on Sunday, with tributes pouring in from former colleagues who recalled Mrs. Oyesiku as a dedicated and well-liked figure during her years at OGTV.

For many residents who grew up watching her on the state network, the manner of her death, violent, sudden, and inside the perceived safety of her own home, has compounded the shock.

Her death adds to a string of recent violent incidents that have unsettled communities along Ogun’s expressway corridors, reviving concerns among residents about security in areas bordering the busy Abeokuta–Sagamu route.

Police have yet to name suspects or confirm a definitive motive, though the missing vehicle and signs of forced entry suggest investigators are weighing robbery alongside other possibilities. The command says further updates will follow as the investigation progresses.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

The killing of Mrs. Kitan Oyesiku and her security guard underscores a troubling reality: even a well-known, retired public figure with private security at her gate wasn’t safe from a violent home invasion.

With her car missing and signs of forced entry, police are treating this as armed robbery-turned-murder, but no suspects have been named yet.
