After an eight-year hiatus from solo studio albums, Grammy-winning artist Bruno Mars announced on Wednesday that his fourth solo album, The Romantic, will be released on February 27, with the lead single dropping this Friday, January 9.

The announcement comes on the heels of an extraordinarily successful year of collaborations for the 39-year-old Hawaiian-born singer. Mars dominated 2024’s charts with two high-profile duets: “Die With a Smile” with Lady Gaga, which claimed the top spot on Billboard’s year-end Hot 100 Songs chart, and “APT.” with K-pop sensation ROSÉ, which landed at No. 9. The latter collaboration has earned three Grammy nominations at the upcoming 68th Annual Grammy Awards, including nods in the prestigious record of the year and song of the year categories.

For fans who have been waiting patiently since 2016’s 24K Magic, the news represents a significant moment. Mars teased the release earlier this week with a succinct social media post declaring, “My album is done,” sending his fanbase into a frenzy of speculation.

The extended gap between solo projects doesn’t reflect a lack of productivity, however. In recent years, Mars has remained highly visible in the music industry through strategic collaborations and live performances. In 2021, he joined forces with Anderson. Paak to form Silk Sonic, a retro-soul duo that delivered the chart-topping hit “Leave the Door Open.” The pair capitalized on their chemistry with a Las Vegas residency at Park MGM in 2022, before Mars embarked on an extensive solo world tour that stretched through 2024.

Mars first exploded onto the pop landscape in 2010 with his debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans, establishing himself as one of the decade’s most consistent hitmakers. His catalog of chart-toppers includes “Just the Way You Are,” “Grenade,” “Locked Out of Heaven,” “When I Was Your Man,” and “That’s What I Like”—songs that have become modern pop standards and wedding reception staples.

The question now facing the industry is whether The Romantic can match the commercial and critical success of Mars’ previous work, particularly given the dramatically changed musical landscape since 2016. However, his recent collaborative successes suggest his commercial instincts remain sharp.

With the lead single arriving Friday, fans won’t have to wait long to hear what direction Mars has taken after his longest break between solo albums. If his recent output is any indication, The Romantic may prove worth the wait.
