After 16 Years, D’Banj Proves He’s Still the Koko Master with New Hit ‘Tobari

Nearly two decades after first captivating audiences with his infectious energy and unmistakable swagger, D’Banj proves he hasn’t lost a step. The self-proclaimed “Koko Master” has unveiled “Tobari,” a pulsating new single that feels both like a nostalgic nod to his glory days and a bold statement about his continued relevance in today’s rapidly evolving African music landscape.

The track, which brings together an impressive trio of continental talent, represents more than just another addition to D’Banj’s extensive catalog. By collaborating with Nigerian nightlife veteran DJ Obi and South African amapiano sensation DJ Maphorisa, the 44-year-old artist demonstrates his keen understanding of how African music has become increasingly borderless and collaborative.

“Tobari” opens with an audacious lifestyle boast that immediately establishes the song’s luxurious aesthetic: “Chilling now in Obi’s house, wearing Timbaland from head to toe.” It’s classic D’Banj—the kind of confident posturing that made him a household name across Africa and beyond during the mid-2000s Afrobeats explosion.

But this isn’t mere nostalgia. The production cleverly weaves together Afro-house rhythms, amapiano’s signature log drum patterns, and street-pop sensibilities, creating a sonic tapestry that speaks to multiple generations of African music lovers. The flirtatious hook “That my koko drives her wild” serves as both a callback to his iconic persona and a reminder of why D’Banj’s charisma remains unmatched.

Perhaps most significantly, “Tobari” incorporates call-and-response Yoruba chants—”To “ba ri… ki le fe wa so?” – transforming what could have been a simple club banger into something approaching a cultural ceremony. This element speaks to D’Banj’s roots while acknowledging the communal nature of African music consumption, where songs live not just in headphones but in shared spaces, from Lagos rooftops to Johannesburg nightclubs.

The timing couldn’t be more strategic. As African artists increasingly dominate global charts and streaming platforms, D’Banj’s return feels less like a comeback and more like a master class in adaptation. His 2024 album “The Entertainer: D’ Sequel” already demonstrated his willingness to reimagine classic material for contemporary audiences, featuring collaborations with Phyno, Akon, Peruzzi, and Awilo Longomba.

“‘Tobari’ is a celebration of sound and friendship,” D’Banj explained in a recent statement. “It’s what happens when icons from different scenes connect; we bring the heat and invite the world to dance with us.” The sentiment captures both the track’s collaborative spirit and the broader trend toward pan-African musical partnerships that have become increasingly common in recent years.

Industry observers note that D’Banj’s choice to work with DJ Maphorisa is particularly shrewd. The South African producer has become synonymous with amapiano’s global rise, having worked with everyone from Wizkid to Major League DJz. Meanwhile, DJ Obi brings deep credibility within Nigeria’s nightlife circuit, ensuring the track will resonate in the clubs where hits are truly born.

The single draws inspiration from D’Banj’s 2008 classic “Why Me,” widely regarded as one of Afrobeats’ foundational tracks. That song announced D’Banj as the “Koko Master” and helped establish the template for the genre’s international expansion. Now, 16 years later, “Tobari” suggests that evolution rather than revolution might be D’Banj’s strategy for maintaining relevance.

As summer approaches, D’Banj positions “Tobari” as the season’s essential soundtrack – a bold claim that his track record suggests he can back up. For an artist who helped define the sound of a generation, this latest offering indicates that his influence on African popular music is far from finished.

Whether “Tobari” achieves the viral success D’Banj envisions remains to be seen. But in an era where authenticity often trumps innovation, the veteran performer’s commitment to his signature style while embracing contemporary production trends positions him well for another chapter in an already remarkable career.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

D’Banj’s new single “Tobari” marks a strategic comeback that blends his classic “Koko Master” persona with contemporary African sounds. By collaborating with DJ Obi and DJ Maphorisa, he’s created a cross-continental anthem that fuses Afro-house, amapiano, and street-pop—proving that veteran artists can stay relevant by embracing collaboration and evolution rather than radical reinvention.

The track positions itself as this summer’s dancefloor essential while demonstrating how African music continues to break borders through strategic partnerships between established legends and rising continental stars.
