EFCC Sacks 40 Workers

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dismissed more than 40 of its employees over allegations of corruption and financial misconduct in the last three years.

EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, disclosed this on Monday, September 1, 2026, during a media interaction held at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja to mark three years of his leadership.

Olukoyede also revealed that about five former or serving EFCC personnel are facing prosecution over alleged corrupt activities. He said other cases involving staff members were at different stages of preparation for legal action.

The EFCC boss explained that the commission could not demand accountability from members of the public while allowing its own officers accused of wrongdoing to escape proper investigation and prosecution.

According to him, the disciplinary action against the affected workers formed part of measures to ensure that EFCC officials followed the same standards they were expected to enforce in the fight against financial crimes.

He said officers working in an anti-corruption agency must maintain clean records and avoid actions that could damage public trust in the commission.

Olukoyede further announced that the EFCC had changed the name of its former Internal Affairs Department to the Department of Ethics and Integrity. The change, he said, was part of measures aimed at improving discipline and dealing with misconduct within the agency.

The commission has also introduced a new gift policy for its personnel. Under the policy, officers will be expected to declare gifts above an approved value, including gifts received from relatives and friends both within Nigeria and outside the country.

The policy is also expected to set out the types of gifts EFCC workers may accept and require officers to explain their sources of income and whether their lifestyles match their legitimate earnings.

Olukoyede said the commission was also pursuing wider reforms to reduce opportunities for financial crimes. He argued that relying only on arrests, investigations and court cases would not be enough to solve the problem of corruption.

He called for changes in government policies and institutions that would prevent public funds and other resources from being diverted in the first place.

The EFCC chairman also appealed to the media and civil society organisations to strengthen their role in monitoring public institutions and holding authorities accountable.

He said a stronger system of checks, better policies and responsible oversight would help reduce the conditions that allow financial crimes to take place.
