A quiet Tuesday morning in the Popo Giwa neighborhood of Ilorin turned to tragedy when a three-story residential building came down without warning, killing four members of a single family and sending rescuers scrambling through the pre-dawn dark to reach survivors trapped in the debris.
The collapse struck at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, near Gogoro Mosque, at around 5 a.m., a time when most of the household would still have been asleep. Eight people from the family were caught beneath the rubble when the structure gave way, according to local officials who responded to the scene.
Residents who gathered as news of the disaster spread described scenes of anguish mixed with fragile hope. An eyewitness, Abdulganiy Musa, told reporters that the family at the center of the tragedy was an ordinary working household: the father a serving soldier, the mother a casual staff member at the Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies in Ilorin.
Amid the chaos, one moment offered a measure of relief. A child from the family, identified only as Firdaus, the second-youngest of the children, was pulled from the wreckage alive as emergency crews worked to widen access into the collapsed section of the building. Her rescue, however, could not offset the grim toll that would soon be confirmed: four family members did not survive.
The scale of the wreckage quickly outstripped what hand tools and manpower alone could manage. An excavator was brought in to help clear heavy debris and open a path to those still buried, as rescue efforts stretched on through the morning.
The response drew in a wide network of emergency and security agencies. Kwara State Fire Service spokesman Hassan Adekunle, who was on the ground, said his agency had received the distress call at about 5 a.m. and mobilized immediately but stressed that a disaster of this magnitude required more than firefighters alone.
“This kind of situation is not something the fire service can handle alone,” Adekunle said, noting that personnel from the Hospitals Management Board and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps joined the operation, alongside other responders.
He added that the fire service’s immediate priority was to rescue those still trapped and determine the cause of the collapse, with findings to be shared with the media once the assessment was complete.
Should inspectors determine that demolition was warranted for what remained of the structure, he said, the appropriate authorities would act while residents would be advised if the building was found safe to remain in.
Ambulances ferried the injured to hospital as the operation continued. The Kwara State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirmed that all eight trapped occupants had been accounted for, with survivors already receiving treatment. “The rescued persons are receiving treatment presently,” said SEMA Secretary Magaji Saadudeen.
Police offered the clearest picture yet of exactly what failed. Kwara State Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi said investigations pointed to a specific section of the property, not the main house, as the point of failure.
“Our findings showed that it was the boys’ quarters of the building that collapsed,” Adekimi said, adding that the main building had since been fully evacuated as a precaution while authorities assess the integrity of what remains standing. “For now, the situation is under control. We will examine the remaining building and see how people can be secured.”
News of the collapse drew swift reaction from state officials. Kwara State Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Lawal Olohungbebe, who represented Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq at the scene, called the incident unfortunate and offered condolences to the bereaved family.
“The rescue mission began immediately after the collapse, and by the grace of God, some were rescued, but unfortunately, we have to take it as this,” Olohungbebe said.
He pointed to one practical factor that aided the response: the building’s accessibility. “One of the things that made it very easy for us to rescue the few people we were able to rescue is the access route,” he said, using the moment to press residents and developers across the state to adhere strictly to building and town-planning regulations.
He also praised the coordinated response from the Ministries of Health and Environment, the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, the National Emergency Management Agency, the Fire Service, Civil Defence, the Red Cross, and other agencies that converged on the scene.
The Chairman of Ilorin West Local Government Area, AbdulRahman Ladan, who monitored the operation, commended both the emergency agencies and residents for their prompt response.
He noted that between six and seven ambulances had been deployed to support the evacuation of victims, a detail underscoring the scale of the mobilization for what was, in the end, a single-family tragedy.
Ladan used the moment to issue a broader caution to residents and developers across the state, urging vigilance over structural safety. “Whenever you discover something like this, please escalate it. Get to the point of evacuating yourself and your family members from that building.
Life is the priority,” he said, calling on developers to use quality materials and engage qualified professionals to supervise construction, a recurring plea in a country where building collapses have become a grimly familiar feature of the news cycle.
As of Tuesday, authorities had not yet released a definitive cause for the collapse, with police and emergency officials describing their on-site work as an initial assessment rather than a conclusive investigation.
Residents of the main building have been evacuated as a precaution, and officials say further findings, including on whether the surviving structure is safe for habitation, will be communicated once the review is complete.
For now, Popo Giwa is left to mourn a family whose ordinary Tuesday morning ended in catastrophe and a city once again confronting hard questions about construction standards, regulatory enforcement, and the fragile line between routine oversight and preventable tragedy.
