State universities set to shutdown
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said it will begin picketing and shut down Lagos State-owned universities due to what it called the failure to carry out the 2025 agreement reached with the Federal Government.
The institutions affected include Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Science and Technology and Lagos State University of Education.
ASUU said the situation has continued despite several attempts to reach the Lagos State Government through letters and meetings.
The Lagos Zonal Chairman of ASUU, speaking during a press briefing at the LASUSTECH main campus in Ikorodu, said members in the affected schools feel neglected because the agreement has not been implemented.
He explained that the union spent several years negotiating with the Federal Government before the final agreement was signed in 2025, with involvement from different education bodies and university representatives.
He said the union expected smooth implementation to avoid disruptions in academic work, but the situation in Lagos State has not followed that expectation.
According to him, months of engagement with state representatives have not produced results, leaving staff members uncertain about their welfare and future.
ASUU also stated that other states have begun to implement the agreement, while Lagos remains behind.
The union added that it remains open to dialogue but will not allow continued delay in what it described as agreed conditions for staff welfare.
It warned that the planned action is part of a wider movement already gaining attention in some state universities across the country.
