Lagos Govt Shuts Down Popular Market

The Lagos State government has announced the closure of the Oshodi Resettlement Market following an attack on officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) during an enforcement operation.

The decision was announced by the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, in a statement posted on his official 𝕏 Account on Tuesday.

According to Wahab, traders at the market obstructed and attacked officers who were carrying out their lawful duties.

He said the traders attacked LAGESC personnel and prevented them from arresting suspected hoodlums and beggars during the operation.

The commissioner further alleged that the suspects vandalised operational vehicles belonging to the agency.

“Oshodi Resettlement Market, Oshodi has been shut down. Traders at the market attacked officers and personnel of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, prevented them from arresting hoodlums and beggars who vandalised the agency’s operational vehicles during an enforcement operation earlier today,” Wahab wrote.

Meanwhile, one person was injured on Monday after an explosion suspected to have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) rocked the Shoe Materials Market in the Mushin area of Lagos State.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, confirmed the incident while speaking with journalists at the scene.

Tijani said the command received a distress report about the explosion and immediately deployed police operatives, including experts from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit, to the area.

According to him, the scene was quickly cordoned off to prevent further danger to traders, residents and passers-by.
