Fresh tension was recorded in Kofan Kaura community of Lafia Local Government Area in Nasarawa State on Friday after some residents publicly set fire to campaign posters belonging to Governor Abdullahi Sule ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The residents, who appeared angry in a video that surfaced online, were also seen burning flags of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as bundles of brooms, the party’s symbol.
The action drew attention from political observers and residents within the area.
The video was accompanied by messages showing opposition to alleged election manipulation and political imposition.
The development has added to discussions surrounding the governor’s political future after his current tenure comes to an end.
Governor Sule is presently serving his second and final term as governor of Nasarawa State. Before now, he had publicly stated during a television appearance that he would not seek another elective position after leaving office.
However, he later changed course and entered the race for the Nasarawa North Senatorial seat ahead of the 2027 elections.
His decision to contest the Senate seat generated reactions in some political circles across the state.
Despite the debates surrounding his ambition, Sule secured victory in the APC senatorial primary election for Nasarawa North.
The governor won the primary by polling 47,393 votes, defeating his closest challenger, Silas Agara, who received 2,915 votes.
The latest incident in Lafia reflects growing political activity in Nasarawa State as preparations gradually begin for the next general elections.
While supporters of the governor continue to back his senatorial ambition, the protest seen in Kofan Kaura suggests that some residents are unhappy with the political direction of the race.
