INEC Raises Security Alarm Over 2027 Elections

Fresh concerns have surfaced over the credibility of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections after the Independent National Electoral Commission raised serious security concerns that could affect the conduct of free, fair, and transparent polls across the country.

The warning has, however, triggered strong reactions from opposition parties, which firmly rejected any suggestion of deploying military personnel to polling units, insisting that election security should remain strictly under civil authorities.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan.

The concerns come amid rising political activities, early alliances, and increasing tension over Nigeria’s security landscape ahead of the next election cycle.

Speaking during a visit to the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, in Abuja, INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), warned that escalating insecurity across various parts of the country poses a direct threat to electoral integrity and democratic stability.

According to him, the electoral system has continued to face challenges ranging from malpractice to violence and vote-buying, all of which undermine public confidence.

He said, “In Nigeria, our electoral system has faced numerous challenges over the years, ranging from malpractices to threats of violence and vote trading that undermine the confidence of the electorate.

“These challenges not only affect the outcome of our elections, but also pose significant risks to our national security. Thus, it is imperative that we address these concerns with utmost seriousness and resolve.”

Amupitan stressed the need for comprehensive security risk assessments ahead of the elections to identify possible flashpoints and deploy effective preventive strategies.

“The scale of insecurity across the various parts of Nigeria presents a threat to the conduct of the fair election. We must carry out total security risk analysis ahead of the election,” he said.

He noted that with the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027, and governorship and state assembly elections fixed for February 6, collaboration between INEC and security agencies, especially the police, remains essential.

The INEC chairman also drew attention to Internally Displaced Persons camps, insisting that displaced Nigerians and persons with disabilities must not be disenfranchised.

“I also want to draw attention to several IDP camps that are scattered all over Nigeria. Let me say that it is their right to also vote, and they must not be disenfranchised,” he stated.

Responding, Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu assured Nigerians that the police had already commenced nationwide intelligence mapping and threat assessment.

He pledged that electoral laws would be enforced professionally.

“I assure you that the police will enforce electoral laws firmly and professionally,” Disu said.

He warned that anyone involved in ballot snatching, vote buying, voter intimidation, destruction of election materials, or attacks on electoral officials would face prosecution.

Despite the assurances, opposition parties expressed strong reservations over any possible military deployment for electoral duties.

The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, argued that internal election security should remain the responsibility of the police and other civil security agencies.

He warned against what he described as possible political manipulation of insecurity concerns.

“This is very important for us to look at if the government of the day is not trying to use insecurity as an issue to ensure that this election does not hold,” he said.

Tanko further alleged that the current administration may be worried about Peter Obi’s possible appearance on the ballot.

Similarly, Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, described the idea of deploying soldiers as inappropriate for a civic process.

“We shouldn’t even go in the direction of soldiers at all. Soldiers are trained to fight war and protect territorial integrity. They are not trained to man polling booths,” he said.

The Peoples Democratic Party’s Interim National Working Committee also argued that internal credibility issues within INEC pose a greater threat to elections than insecurity itself.

The committee’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said the commission should focus on rebuilding trust and ensuring transparency.

“Insincerity and partisanship within INEC pose a greater threat to elections than insecurity,” he said.

The New Nigeria People’s Party also urged the Federal Government to urgently address insecurity before the polls.

Its National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, said the remaining months before the elections provide enough time for authorities to improve the security situation if genuine efforts are made.

INEC Chairman

Meanwhile, insecurity is already affecting political activities.

The Social Democratic Party announced the relocation of its May 9 national convention from Abuja to Bauchi State, citing logistical and security concerns.

The party’s National Chairman, Prof. Sadiq Gombe, said the relocation became necessary after challenges in securing a suitable venue in Abuja.

He added that several committees had been set up to ensure a smooth and transparent convention process.

The latest developments underscore growing anxiety over the ability of Nigeria’s institutions to deliver credible elections in an atmosphere increasingly shaped by political uncertainty and security challenges.

What You Should Know

INEC’s latest warning has intensified concerns about whether Nigeria can successfully conduct credible elections in 2027 amid worsening insecurity.

While the electoral commission is calling for stronger collaboration with security agencies, opposition parties fear that military involvement could create tension and undermine confidence in the process. The debate reflects broader distrust between political actors and institutions ahead of the polls.

With election dates already fixed, the focus is now shifting toward whether authorities can restore public trust, improve security nationwide, and guarantee an electoral process that allows all Nigerians, including displaced persons, to vote freely and safely.
