Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi met behind closed doors on Monday, in what is seen as part of ongoing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Details of the meeting were shared by the mobilisation wing of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which described the engagement as “high-level” and centred on the possibility of opposition parties presenting a single presidential candidate.

“Goodluck Jonathan and Peter Obi are having high-level discussions about presenting one presidential candidate for the opposition parties,” the group stated.
Obi reportedly attended the meeting with a delegation that included Igbo elders, ADC senators from the South-East, and other political associates, reflecting broader regional and political consultations.
The meeting comes amid Obi’s increasing political engagements across the country, as discussions intensify around a potential alliance within opposition ranks. He has also been linked with possible collaboration with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, another key political figure associated with ongoing coalition talks.

The development follows a recent opposition summit held in Ibadan, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The summit brought together prominent political actors, including Atiku Abubakar, Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi, among others.
In a communiqué issued after the meeting, participating opposition figures agreed to work towards forming a united front ahead of the 2027 elections. Central to the discussions was a commitment to presenting a single consensus presidential candidate to challenge the ruling party.

They also raised concerns about what they described as a gradual drift toward a one-party state, stressing the need to strengthen multi-party democracy in Nigeria.
Monday’s meeting between Jonathan and Obi is being viewed by observers as part of broader efforts to consolidate opposition alliances, test political alignments, and shape a coordinated strategy as the 2027 electoral cycle approaches.
