US President Donald Trump was hurried off stage by Secret Service agents on Saturday evening after gunfire erupted during a high-profile media gala in Washington, in what he later described as an attempted assassination.

The incident occurred at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner held at the Washington Hilton, where Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, top government officials, and hundreds of guests had gathered.

According to the president, a man armed with multiple weapons charged through a security checkpoint just outside the ballroom, triggering a swift response from armed security personnel.

“A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of the Secret Service,” Trump said shortly after the incident.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as guests scrambled for safety, diving under tables while Secret Service agents secured the venue and evacuated key officials.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect, believed to be acting alone, was subdued after an exchange of gunfire. Washington police chief Jeffery Carroll said a Secret Service officer was struck but protected by a ballistic vest and is expected to recover.

Suspected Assassin

The suspect, reportedly armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives, has been taken into custody and is expected to face charges. Investigations are ongoing, with federal agents also examining a residence in California linked to the individual.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has yet to officially confirm the suspect’s identity, though multiple reports suggest he may be a 31-year-old from Torrance, California.

The security breach has raised fresh concerns about presidential safety, particularly given past incidents. Trump referenced the 2024 Butler rally shooting, where he was injured during a campaign event, as well as another near-miss at a golf course months later.

Notably, the Washington Hilton itself holds historical significance as the site of the 1981 assassination attempt on Ronald Reagan, where former President Ronald Reagan was shot.

Despite the scare, Trump indicated that the event, often dubbed “Nerd Prom,” would likely be rescheduled within a month.

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a long-standing tradition that brings together journalists, policymakers, and celebrities, is typically marked by humor and political commentary. This year’s edition, however, was overshadowed by a dramatic security incident that has once again put the spotlight on threats facing public officials in the United States.

What you should know

The attempted attack on President Trump at a major public event highlights ongoing security risks surrounding high-profile political figures in the United States.

The swift response by Secret Service agents prevented what could have been a far more serious incident.

This development adds to a pattern of recent threats against Trump, raising broader concerns about political violence and security preparedness. Investigations are ongoing to determine the suspect’s motive and any possible connections.

The incident also underscores the vulnerability of even heavily secured events, prompting renewed scrutiny of protective measures.
