The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Jigawa State has reaffirmed its readiness to participate fully in the 2027 general elections, declaring that it will present candidates for all elective positions.

The assurance comes amid rising political speculation, including claims that the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Mustafa Lamido, may defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at a joint meeting of the State Working Committee and Local Government Chairmen held at the PDP Secretariat in Dutse, the State Chairman, Prof. Babandi Gumel, dismissed the rumours as baseless.

“The party will field candidates in all the elective positions during the forthcoming 2027 general elections,” Gumel stated.

He rejected suggestions that the party might collapse into another political platform, attributing such claims to political opponents.

Gumel described the speculation as “the handiwork of political starters who have nothing to show in the area of provision of democratic dividends to the people in Jigawa State.”

He maintained that the PDP remains united and determined to reclaim political control in the state.

Highlighting the party’s legacy, he said the PDP’s governance record under former governor Sule Lamido remains unmatched in the state.

“PDP under the guidance, leadership, and tutelage of Dr Sule Lamido is second to none to all parties in Jigawa when the issue of development of the state is being discussed,” he added.

The chairman also called on party leaders at the grassroots level to intensify the ongoing electronic membership registration exercise.

He urged them to “work assiduously round the clock to ensure all members are registered” ahead of the party’s primaries.

Gumel further announced the formation of a 13-member committee tasked with overseeing the sale of nomination forms and screening of aspirants.

He directed interested aspirants to liaise with the committee at the party secretariat in Dutse.

Reiterating the party’s ambition, Gumel said the PDP is repositioning itself to contest and win elections across all levels in 2027, despite ongoing political speculation.

What you should know

The Jigawa PDP has dismissed rumours of internal defections and insisted it will field candidates for all positions in the 2027 elections.

Party leaders say the PDP remains united and focused on reclaiming power while also strengthening its internal structure through member registration and candidate screening processes.

The statement comes amid speculation about potential defections but signals the party’s determination to remain competitive and relevant in the state’s political landscape.
