Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, is set to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Agege Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, marking a significant shift from his earlier governorship ambition.
Obasa had initially positioned himself as a contender to succeed Babajide Sanwo-Olu, reportedly engaging in extensive political consultations across the state through the revival of the Mandate Group, a political structure closely associated with Bola Tinubu.
The consultations were aimed at consolidating support among loyalists and strengthening his chances in the governorship race. However, sources within the All Progressives Congress (APC) disclosed that the political landscape shifted after Tinubu, in consultation with the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), reportedly backed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred candidate.
Following this development, Obasa was said to have redirected his ambition toward the Lagos West Senatorial District, with plans to challenge incumbent senator Idiat Adebule.

His interest in the senatorial race reportedly gained traction within party circles but encountered resistance from the APC’s national leadership and its women’s wing. Stakeholders argued that Adebule’s position as the only female senator from the South-West made her candidacy vital for gender representation in the National Assembly.
Amid the pushback, Tinubu was said to have advised Obasa to pursue a seat in the House of Representatives instead.
Sources indicated that he has now been directed to contest for the Agege Federal Constituency seat, currently represented by Wale Ahmed.
It was gathered that Obasa has already begun quiet mobilisation efforts in Agege, working to build grassroots support for his new political objective. The move represents a notable shift, especially as he had previously backed another aspirant, Mr Egunjobi, for the same seat.
Observers say the development highlights the fluid nature of APC politics in Lagos as the 2027 elections approach, with internal negotiations and leadership influence continuing to shape the ambitions of key political figures.
What you should know
Mudashiru Obasa has reportedly abandoned his governorship ambition and is now targeting a House of Representatives seat for Agege Federal Constituency ahead of 2027.
The shift follows APC internal decisions favouring Obafemi Hamzat for governor and retaining Idiat Adebule in the Senate.
Party dynamics, including gender considerations and leadership influence, played a key role in redirecting Obasa’s political path. His move reflects ongoing realignments within Lagos APC as the election cycle approaches.
