The Central Bank of Nigeria has refuted claims circulating online about the introduction of a new N5,000 banknote, describing the report as false.
The claim emerged after an image went viral on social media, allegedly showing a redesigned N5,000 note bearing the image of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The post sparked widespread reactions, with many users questioning whether the new denomination had been officially released.
Responding to the speculation, the apex bank issued a clarification via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, stating:
“This content is fake. Let the public be guided.”
The CBN emphasized that it has not introduced any such banknote and urged Nigerians to disregard the misleading information.

This is not the first time such claims have surfaced. In 2025, the bank similarly dismissed reports suggesting the introduction of N5,000 and N10,000 denominations to ease cash transactions, reaffirming at the time that no such policy existed.
The latest denial highlights ongoing concerns about the spread of misinformation on social media, especially on issues related to monetary policy and the nation’s financial system.
The CBN continues to advise the public to rely only on official communication channels for accurate updates regarding currency changes and financial regulations.
