The Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed concerns triggered by a recent advisory from the United States Department of State, which approved the departure of non-essential personnel from its embassy in Abuja, describing the move as a routine precaution.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, through his Special Assistant on Media, Rabiu Ibrahim, assured both Nigerians and the international community that the country remains stable and fully functional.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris speaking

According to the minister, public institutions across Nigeria continue to operate effectively, with no disruptions to governance, economic activities, or everyday life.

He clarified that the United States’ decision was based on its own internal security procedures and should not be interpreted as a reflection of the broader security situation across Nigeria.

“While we acknowledge isolated security challenges in some areas, there is no general breakdown of law and order, and the vast majority of the country remains stable,” Idris stated.

The government also highlighted ongoing security efforts, noting that coordinated military operations, intelligence-led strategies, and improved collaboration among security agencies have yielded measurable results.

Idris pointed out that recent operations in affected areas have led to the disruption of criminal networks, a reduction in the activities of armed groups, and improved safety in vulnerable communities.

“Our security agencies remain actively engaged in protecting lives and property, and the results of these efforts are increasingly evident,” he said.

Nigerian Military Reinforcement

In addition, the government reaffirmed Nigeria’s openness to international engagement, stressing that the country remains an attractive destination for business, tourism, and investment.

The minister noted that ongoing economic reforms are strengthening investor confidence and enhancing Nigeria’s global reputation, with foreign partners continuing to maintain strong engagement with the country.

While acknowledging the right of other nations to issue travel advisories based on their own assessments, the Federal Government called for more balanced and updated reporting that accurately reflects improvements on the ground.

“We encourage our international partners to continuously engage with Nigerian authorities to obtain a more comprehensive and current understanding of the situation,” Idris added.

Reiterating its commitment to national security, the government assured citizens and foreign visitors alike that efforts to protect lives and property will remain a top priority, while maintaining Nigeria’s position as a safe and welcoming destination.

What you should know

The Federal Government has responded to the US advisory by emphasizing that Nigeria remains largely stable despite isolated security challenges.

Officials say the evacuation of non-essential US embassy staff is a precautionary step based on internal protocols, not a reflection of widespread insecurity.

The government highlighted ongoing military and intelligence operations aimed at improving safety and disrupting criminal activities. It also reassured investors and international partners of Nigeria’s economic stability and openness.

Authorities are urging for balanced global reporting and continued engagement to better reflect the country’s current security progress and overall national stability.
