Donald Trump on Tuesday announced that he has agreed to suspend planned bombing operations against Iran for two weeks, contingent on Tehran reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

“Subject to the Islamic Republic of Iran agreeing to the COMPLETE, IMMEDIATE, and SAFE OPENING of the Strait of Hormuz, I agree to suspend the bombing and attack of Iran for a period of two weeks,” Trump stated.

“This will be a double sided CEASEFIRE!” he added, noting that both sides are expected to halt hostilities during the period.

Trump explained that the temporary ceasefire follows what he described as the achievement of key military objectives and progress toward a broader peace agreement. “The reason for doing so is that we have already met and exceeded all Military objectives, and are very far along with a definitive Agreement concerning Longterm PEACE with Iran, and PEACE in the Middle East,” he said.

According to the US president, Washington has received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he believes provides a workable framework for negotiations.

He added that the two-week window would allow both sides to finalize and implement a long-term agreement.

The development comes after a last-minute diplomatic effort reportedly involving Pakistan to prevent a major escalation.

Trump had earlier warned that failure to reach a deal could result in catastrophic consequences, stating that “a whole civilization will die tonight” without an agreement.

What you should know

Donald Trump has agreed to pause US bombing of Iran for two weeks if Iran reopens the Strait of Hormuz.

The move signals a possible breakthrough in negotiations, with both sides reportedly close to a broader peace deal aimed at stabilizing tensions in the Middle East.
