Suspected terrorists have launched a deadly assault on Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area, targeting Christian worshippers during Easter celebrations and leaving multiple casualties in their wake.

The нападение, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday, threw the community into chaos as heavily armed attackers stormed the area in large numbers, opening fire on worshippers gathered for Easter services.

Confirming the incident, the councillor representing Awon Ward, Mark Bawa, identified the affected worship centres as First ECWA Church Ariko and St. Augustine Catholic Church Ariko.

“I am currently on my way to the community to ascertain the exact number of casualties. Some sources said seven persons were killed, while others claimed eight. I will provide an update once details are confirmed,” Bawa said.

He explained that limited telecommunications coverage in the area may have worsened the situation, delaying any immediate emergency response.

“The attackers came in large numbers. They surrounded the area and began shooting sporadically at worshippers. Several people were killed, while many others were taken away into the bush,” he added.

Residents reported that the gunmen operated for a prolonged period without resistance, heightening fears over the safety of rural communities in the region.

As of the time of filing this report, the Kaduna State Police Command had not released an official statement regarding the incident.

The latest attack underscores ongoing security challenges in parts of Kaduna State, particularly in rural communities where residents often face delayed security response during emergencies.

What you should know

A deadly attack on Easter worshippers in Kaduna State has left at least seven people dead and several others abducted, highlighting persistent insecurity in rural Nigeria.

The assault targeted two churches in Ariko community, raising concerns about the safety of religious gatherings and the vulnerability of remote areas. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement, while local leaders continue to assess the damage.

The incident adds to ongoing security challenges in northern Nigeria, where attacks on communities remain a major concern.
