The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has called for a change from money-driven politics to leadership based on competence during a visit to Kaduna State.

Obi made the call on Sunday while meeting with stakeholders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of his ongoing nationwide consultations.

He shared details of the visit on his verified Facebook page, explaining that the meeting gave him a better understanding of the political situation in the state.

“Today… I visited Kaduna State, where I met with our party stakeholders and members,” Obi said.

During the visit, he met with some notable political figures, including Dr. Ahmed Tijjani, a governorship hopeful, and Senator Lawal Adamu Usman, who represents Kaduna Central.

The former Governor of Anambra State said the discussions showed that many stakeholders are eager to contribute to national development.

Obi described Kaduna as a very important state in Nigeria’s path to development.

According to him, the state once stood as a strong symbol of unity and economic strength through its industries, agriculture, and commerce.

“Kaduna remains a very strategic state… it still holds that potential,” he said.

Obi stressed the importance of rebuilding trust and promoting unity among Nigerians, warning that division continues to hinder progress.

“A divided society cannot progress, but a united… one will always find a path to peace and development,” he stated.

He also criticised the growing role of money in politics and urged leaders to focus instead on competence, integrity, and clear results.

“Leaders must move away from the politics of money and embrace competence, character, and results,” Obi said.

Obi also expressed confidence that Nigeria can overcome its current challenges if the country has the right leadership and people work together.

“This visit has strengthened my belief that with the right leadership and collective effort, we can build a Nigeria that works—one where every citizen, regardless of background, has a sense of belonging and opportunity.

“I leave Kaduna feeling encouraged and hopeful that a New Nigeria is POssible,” Peter Obi wrote.
