Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was reportedly killed during Israeli airstrikes inside Iran on Saturday, according to multiple media accounts.

Israeli outlet Ma’ariv, cited by the New York Post, reported that Ahmadinejad had been under house arrest at the time and was killed in what was described as a targeted strike on his residence. The Israeli War Room also quoted Iranian media sources as confirming his death.

Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

“Former president of Iran’s Islamist Terror Regime, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was eliminated, per Iranian media. Ahmadinejad was sanctioned by the US in 2023 for involvement in the wrongful detention of Americans,” the report stated.

Ahmadinejad, who served as Iran’s president from 2005 to 2013, was widely known for his hardline stance, confrontational rhetoric toward the West, and his role during a period of heightened tensions over Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Iranian Officials Reported Killed

In addition to Ahmadinejad, several senior Iranian officials were named in reports as having been killed during the Israeli military operations:

  • Aziz Nasirzadeh – Minister of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics
  • Mohammad Shirazi – Chief of the Military Bureau of the Supreme Leader
  • Ali Shamkhani – Supreme Leader’s Adviser for Security Affairs and Secretary of the Defence Council
  • Hossein Jabal Amelian – Chairman of SPND
  • Mohammad Pakpour – Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC)
  • Reza Mozafari-Nia – Former Chairman of SPND

The reported deaths come amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran, following a series of strikes and counter-strikes that have heightened regional tensions.

As of the time of reporting, there has been no independent verification of the claims, and official confirmation from Iranian authorities remains limited.

What you should know

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reportedly been killed in Israeli airstrikes, according to media outlets citing Iranian sources, though independent confirmation is still pending.

Several high-ranking Iranian military and security officials were also named among those allegedly killed.
