Prosecutors Seek Reduced Sentence for Boosie Badazz, Citing Troubled Childhood

Federal prosecutors are recommending a two-year prison sentence for Louisiana rapper Boosie Badazz following his guilty plea to federal gun possession charges, court documents filed on Friday reveal—a recommendation that underscores the complex calculus of justice when childhood trauma collides with repeat offenses.

The sentencing recommendation, submitted to a federal judge ahead of a hearing scheduled for later this week, represents a significant departure from the maximum 15-year sentence the rapper faced if convicted at trial and even falls short of the four-year term suggested by probation officials. Prosecutors cited Boosie’s “difficult upbringing, which likely contributed to his current predicament” as a primary factor justifying the reduced sentence.

In newly filed court documents obtained by this publication, federal prosecutors paint a detailed portrait of the 41-year-old rapper’s troubled early years—a childhood marked by domestic violence, parental substance abuse, and profound loss.

“During his childhood, the defendant was witness to domestic violence between his parents as well as his father’s substance abuse issues,” prosecutors wrote. “The death of the defendant’s father due to a brain tumor deeply affected him, leading to depression and behavioral problems in his teenage years.”

The documents further detail a pattern of substance abuse that prosecutors say began shockingly early. According to their filing, Boosie, whose legal name is Torence Hatch, began drinking alcohol at age 13 and experimented with ecstasy and liquid codeine—substances prosecutors linked directly to “his lifestyle as a performer.”

Boosie was initially charged in June 2023 with being a felon in possession of a firearm, a federal offense that prohibits individuals with prior felony convictions from owning guns. The rapper’s 2011 drug conviction, along with several earlier offenses, made him ineligible to possess firearms under federal law.

The circumstances surrounding his arrest were notably unconventional. Law enforcement officers first spotted what appeared to be a handgun in Boosie’s waistband while monitoring the Instagram feed of a known gang member. Authorities then deployed a helicopter to track the rapper in real-time through what they described as a gang-associated neighborhood in San Diego. During a subsequent traffic stop, officers recovered a Glock pistol from the vehicle.

After months of legal maneuvering, the case was set for trial last summer. But in August, a visibly weary Boosie accepted a plea deal, telling associates he was “tired of fighting” and wanted to “get on with my life.” As part of that agreement, federal prosecutors promised to recommend the two-year sentence they formally requested on Friday.

While prosecutors acknowledged mitigating factors in Boosie’s background, their filing made clear they were not offering blanket sympathy. They pointed repeatedly to his “extensive criminal history” and noted that previous incarcerations “seemingly have not acted as a deterrent.”

The government also highlighted a troubling incident immediately following Boosie’s 2023 arrest, when the rapper allegedly threatened members of his own security detail. According to prosecutors, Boosie told one individual at the police precinct that he was “going to put you in a body bag”—a threat prosecutors characterized as evidence of his potential danger to others.

“Defendant’s insistence on carrying a weapon despite his status as a convicted felon, coupled with his criminal history, which includes threats to harm or kill, and the fact that he threatened another individual in connection with this matter, weighs against any further variance other than that recommended by the United States,” prosecutors argued in their filing.

Nevertheless, prosecutors praised Boosie for having “clearly demonstrated acceptance of responsibility” for his actions—a key factor under federal sentencing guidelines that can result in reduced prison time.

As the sentencing hearing approaches, multiple news outlets have reported that Boosie has retained a team of lobbyists to explore an alternative path: seeking a presidential pardon from Donald Trump. The president, who has issued pardons at a significantly higher rate than his predecessors, recently granted clemency to live music executive Timothy J. Leiweke, among others.

Whether such a strategy would prove successful remains unclear, particularly given that Boosie has not yet been sentenced and would need to serve time before becoming eligible for commutation or pardon under typical Justice Department protocols.

The rapper’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for later this week, where a federal judge will weigh the government’s recommendation against the probation office’s suggestion and the severity of the underlying offense. The final decision will determine whether one of Southern hip-hop’s most controversial figures faces two years or considerably more behind bars.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Federal prosecutors are asking for just two years in prison for rapper Boosie Badazz on gun charges—half what probation officials recommended and far less than the 15-year maximum. The reduced sentence reflects his troubled childhood marked by domestic violence, his father’s death, and early substance abuse starting at age 8. However, prosecutors note his extensive criminal history and post-arrest threats show previous prison terms haven’t deterred him.

Boosie pleaded guilty last August after saying he was “tired of fighting,” and his sentencing hearing is scheduled for this week. Meanwhile, he’s reportedly hired lobbyists to pursue a potential pardon from President Trump.
