What Bloggers Buried: The Real Message Behind Pastor Ibiyeomie’s $2 Million Wristwatch

When Pastor David Ibiyeomie mentioned a $2 million wristwatch from the pulpit, Nigerian bloggers ran with the headline and left the sermon behind. This piece recovers what they cut: a teaching on problem-solving as the foundation of reward, and the spiritual source that makes it possible.

When Clicks Matter More Than Context

Something has gone wrong with the way digital content creators handle information. The agenda-setting role that journalism once played with care has been handed over to people whose primary metric is virality, not value. Shorts and reels are trimmed to the most outlandish detail, and anything that would offer context or meaning to audiences gets left behind. Empowering audiences with inspiring information is secondary, if it registers at all.

This is not responsible gatekeeping. Traditional gatekeeping theory holds that those who control the flow of information do so in the interest of the social fabric. What we see instead is opportunistic farming for views, engagements, and clout. When confronted, the defense is always the same: “Bad news sells.”

Bloggers have been successful at attracting attention with abridged, abrupt content. But whether their brand of agenda-setting is driven by personal prejudice, the shrinking attention span of audiences, mischief, or outright misinformation remains an open question. In an environment where most users never read past the headline, half-information does not just mislead people. It robs them of something.

The Story That Trended and the Story That Was Told

A fortnight ago, the Nigerian blogosphere buzzed with reports of Pastor David Ibiyeomie bragging about being gifted a wristwatch worth $2 million, claiming that Nigerians on social media would faint if they saw his full collection. The sensational framing left unsuspecting readers with one clear impression: a man of God had climbed the pulpit to flaunt his wealth.

That was not the preacher’s mission. What trended was an aside, an anecdote used to illustrate a larger point. Bloggers chose to build their agenda around the clickable detail rather than the instructive core. Now that the traction has been captured, it is worth surfacing what was buried, because the unsung part of that sermon can be of genuine benefit to whoever takes it seriously.

The Line That Got Cut: “I’m Getting Watches Because I’m Solving Problems”

After disclosing that someone had gifted him a watch worth $2 million, and noting that his full collection would stun people who only know the one circulating online, the Port Harcourt-based pastor added: “I’m getting watches because I’m solving problems.”

That line is the crux. It is the part bloggers left out, and it is the part that carries the revelation.

There is an old principle in Scripture: the one who diligently solves problems will stand before kings and not before obscure men. That was the story of Joseph. His ability to solve problems took him from prison to the palace. By the time he interpreted Pharaoh’s dream and proposed a plan to save a nation from famine, a falsely accused immigrant had become the prime minister of the world’s greatest superpower at the time.

If solving problems can produce that kind of elevation, it should not surprise anyone that a problem solver like Ibiyeomie receives extraordinary gifts. His peers who offer spiritual guidance and prayer have been similarly rewarded. Some people actually struggle to find adequate ways to express their gratitude to these men. The moral posturing about their material rewards misses the point entirely.

The Real Problem Solver Behind the Man

Even so, these pastors are not the ultimate source of the solutions they offer. They are vessels through which the actual problem solver works. That problem solver is the Holy Spirit, who takes up residence in everyone who believes in the resurrected Christ and confesses Jesus as Lord and personal saviour.

John 16:13 describes what He does: He guides believers into all truth, speaks only what He hears from the Father, and declares things to come. That kind of spiritual insight is what enables people to solve quandaries and mysteries that others cannot. It is the same Spirit who powered the mighty works of Jesus’ earthly ministry, and He is all the believer needs. Nothing is too big or too small for Him to address.

How God Inspires Problem-Solving: A Story from a King’s Court

In a community where livestock breeding was the primary occupation, a stray sheep was found and brought to the king’s palace. Two men stepped forward, each insisting the animal was his. Neither would yield, and none of the court officials could resolve the dispute.

The king, a born-again Christian, chose to pray for wisdom. He set a date for his verdict and spent the night before in intense prayer. The Lord brought John 10:4–5 to his heart, and he immediately knew his answer had come.

The next morning, before the assembled community, the sheep was tethered with a long rope. The king gave each claimant a chance to attract the animal’s attention, with the sheep further distracted by fodder. The first man tried every cue he could devise. The sheep barely looked up. When his time expired, the second man stepped forward. The sheep abandoned its feed and followed him, and the matter was settled beyond argument.

That is one of the ways God inspires His people to solve problems. The key is knowing the Word. Scripture contains solutions to every problem and need, and God wells up in a yielded heart a specific word for each situation. When that word is diligently applied, the results leave people in awe. Do this consistently for yourself, and you will find that the same approach begins to work for the problems of others, making you a problem solver in their lives as well.

Train your spiritual antenna to hear God clearly. Do it often. And when you start hearing, always verify what you receive against the Word of God.

The Grace Is Available, but Few Have Primed Themselves for It

Romans 8:19 says that creation is eagerly waiting for the revealing of the sons of God. The world has problems that only Spirit-led people can solve, and it knows it, even when it cannot articulate why. The grace to be that kind of problem solver is available to every believer. But not many have primed themselves to the level where they can call forth answers from Heaven.

The child of God can have the unction of Moses, whom God taught His ways so that he could manifest His acts by solving the problems of the children of Israel. That quality of relationship with God, where you know His ways and not just His acts, is what produces the kind of solutions that reward a person with extraordinary gifts.

A Warning: Do Not Go the Way of Gehazi

There is a caution worth stating plainly. Those easily lured by material reward must be careful not to walk the path of Gehazi, the servant of Elisha who secretly pursued the gifts his master had refused, and paid for it with his health (2 Kings 5:19–27).

The Master’s instruction in Matthew 10:8 is to give as freely as you have received. When you operate that way, God can, as in Pastor Ibiyeomie’s case, inspire you with the solution to someone’s problem and move that same person to bless you with gifts you could not have arranged for yourself. These are the cheerful givers who insist that God sent them specifically to be a blessing to you, even when well-meaning people around them suggest that what they are carrying must be meant for God alone.

That is the story bloggers chose not to tell. Now you have it.
