WAFCON 2026: Quarter-Final Lineup Confirmed

The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-final draw is complete, and defending champions Nigeria now find themselves staring down old rivals Cameroon in a tie that instantly leapt to the top of the tournament’s most-anticipated fixtures.

The picture crystallized on Thursday when Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses played out a 1-1 draw with tournament debutants Cape Verde in Casablanca, a result that mattered little to Cameroon’s standing but everything to the shape of the bracket.

Cameroon secured top spot in Group D at the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2026, setting up a quarter-final showdown with defending champions Nigeria.

According to reports from the match, Grace Mendoua gave Cameroon the lead in the first half before Ivania Moreira equalized for Cape Verde shortly after the break.

The result meant Cameroon closed out the group phase unbeaten, riding a mix of victories and stalemates into the knockouts with the swagger of a team that has yet to taste defeat on Moroccan soil.

For Cape Verde, there was still cause for celebration amid the exit; the tournament debutants left with a historic first point at the competition despite bowing out. It’s the kind of milestone that won’t show up in the record books as silverware but will be remembered fondly in Praia all the same.

Nigeria’s path here was anything but serene. The Super Falcons stumbled out of the blocks with a shock opening defeat, then had to claw their way back into contention, and Wednesday night in Rabat, they did so in spectacular fashion.

Nigeria put up a sensational attacking masterclass at the Stade Moulay Hassan, overpowering Egypt 6–2 to set up the heavyweight quarter-final against Cameroon.

Asisat Oshoala opened the scoring in the 21st minute from the penalty spot after a VAR review confirmed a handball inside Egypt’s box, before substitute Gift Monday doubled Nigeria’s advantage in first-half stoppage time, finishing off a slick short-corner routine involving Toni Payne and Rinsola Babajide.

But the group standings told a far more dramatic story than the scoreline suggested. Nigeria, Malawi, and Zambia all finished level on six points after three matches, and with the tiebreaker rules stripping out results against the whole group, only head-to-head matches among the three counted.

Malawi came out on top of that mini-league to claim the group, while Nigeria finished second and Zambia, despite also sitting on six points, dropped to third. It was a reminder that in this WAFCON, even a strong finish can be overshadowed by the fine print of the rulebook.

That quirk of arithmetic is precisely what has now put Nigeria on a collision course with Cameroon rather than a rematch with Ghana.

Ghana, for their part, could only finish as Group D runners-up after losing the decisive head-to-head meeting with Cameroon, closing off any possibility of an all-West African quarter-final between the two rivals for now, at least.

The full last-eight picture is a mouth-watering spread across two cities. Saturday opens proceedings with Côte d’Ivoire against Algeria in Casablanca, followed by hosts Morocco taking on defending runners-up South Africa in Rabat, with the Atlas Lionesses hoping home support can carry them past a battle-hardened Banyana Banyana side. Sunday belongs to the showpiece: Cameroon versus Nigeria in Casablanca and Malawi versus Ghana in Rabat.

The Nigeria-Cameroon fixture is scheduled for August 9 at 6:00 p.m., and the stakes stretch well beyond a semi-final berth.

Every quarter-final winner punches an automatic ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, turning each of these four matches into a de facto World Cup qualifier as much as a continental knockout tie.

For Nigeria, it’s a chance to defend the crown they won at the last edition while banking a World Cup slot in the same afternoon.

For Cameroon, unbeaten and full of belief, it’s an opportunity to prove their group-stage consistency translates when the margins tighten. Whichever way it breaks, Sunday in Casablanca promises to be the fixture the entire tournament has been building toward.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

As the WAFCON 2026 knockout stage arrives, one fact towers above the rest: this quarter-final round isn’t just about silverware; it’s a straight ticket to the 2027 World Cup in Brazil.

Nigeria’s clash with unbeaten Cameroon on Sunday headlines a weekend where every winner secures continental progress and global qualification in one stroke, making these four matches arguably the highest-stakes fixtures of the tournament so far.
