Flavour Recalls Night He Was Booted From Stage for P-Square

Long before “Ada Ada” turned him into one of Nigeria’s most enduring highlife voices, Chinedu Okoli, better known to millions as Flavour Nabania, was just another hungry performer working the club circuit, hoping a single good night would change his fortunes.

Instead, one particular night handed him a lesson in humility he says he has never forgotten.

In a candid sit-down on a recent podcast, Flavour revisited a chapter of his career rarely discussed in the glossy narrative of his current success: the night he was unceremoniously pulled off a stage to make room for P-Square, the twin duo of Peter and Paul Okoye, who were then riding the crest of their fame.

According to Flavour, he was mid-performance at a club when P-Square walked in unannounced. Before he could finish his set, the venue’s manager instructed him to cut his performance short and vacate the stage a request he says he complied with quietly, switching off his microphone and retreating to a corner of the room to watch what followed.

What he witnessed, by his own account, stung. The moment Paul Okoye took the microphone and launched into the duo’s hit “Temptation,” the crowd erupted in a reception, Flavour recalled, unlike anything his own set had drawn that night.

It left him privately questioning why two artistes working in the same industry, making what he considered comparable music, could command such different levels of adoration from the very same audience.

It would have been easy, industry watchers note, for a moment like that to break a young artiste’s resolve. Public rejection in front of a crowd, especially one that had, moments earlier, been his own, is the kind of experience that ends careers before they properly begin.

But Flavour has framed the episode not as a setback, but as fuel. He says the sting of that night pushed him to double down on his craft rather than resent the duo who unknowingly humbled him.

Today, that resolve looks vindicated. Flavour has gone on to build a career defined by consistency rather than viral spectacle a two-decade run rooted in highlife, Igbo culture, and live-band musicianship that has made him a fixture at weddings, festivals, and concerts across Africa and the diaspora.

His path there, as he has recounted in other interviews, began not in nightclubs but in the church, where he served for over a decade as a choir conductor and drummer before joining a music outfit that shaped his early sound a band he stayed with for thirteen years, eventually rising to become its leader.

P-Square, for their part, are referenced in the current telling as a “now-defunct” act, a nod to the well-documented and very public fallout between Peter and Paul Okoye, which fractured one of Africa’s most successful musical partnerships and has, at various points, spilled into further public disputes between the brothers.

The anecdote has struck a chord with fans online, many of whom see it less as a swipe at P-Square and more as a testament to Flavour’s staying power.

In an industry where fame can be fleeting and crowds fickle, his willingness to revisit a moment of public embarrassment and frame it as the spark behind his work ethic has only reinforced his reputation as one of Afrobeats’ more grounded elder statesmen.

Neither Peter nor Paul Okoye had publicly responded to Flavour’s comments at the time of this report.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Flavour’s stage-side humiliation by P-Square wasn’t a career-ending moment; it became the turning point that fueled his work ethic.

Consistency outlasts a single night’s crowd reaction. The artistes who get booed off today can still be headlining decades later, while momentary stardom can fade.
Flavour’s two-decade run proves that resilience, not applause, builds a lasting career.
