President Bola Tinubu is set to leave Abuja on Saturday, June 28, 2025, for a diplomatic tour of Saint Lucia and Brazil, according to a statement from his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.

The president’s first destination is Saint Lucia, where he will undertake a state visit focused on enhancing Nigeria’s relationship with Caribbean nations. Afterward, he will travel to Brazil to take part in the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, scheduled for July 6–7, 2025.

His participation in the BRICS Summit follows Nigeria’s recognition as a “partner country.” The summit’s central theme, “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” will center on cooperation among developing nations and fostering joint progress in social, economic, and environmental matters.

During his time in Saint Lucia, President Tinubu is expected to deliver an address to a joint session of the nation’s Senate and House of Assembly at the William Jefferson Clinton Ballroom, Sandals Grande, Gros Islet.

The event will bring together leaders of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), senior government officials, diplomats, members of Nigeria’s diaspora in the region, and the Director-General of the OECS, Dr. Didacus Jules.

Following the joint session, the president will host a working luncheon with OECS heads of government. He will also visit the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in Castries as part of efforts to promote educational collaboration and academic exchange. He will be accompanied by senior government officials on both legs of the visit.

What you should know

President Tinubu’s diplomatic visits to Saint Lucia and Brazil mark an effort to elevate Nigeria’s international partnerships, particularly within the Caribbean and Global South.

His presence at the BRICS Summit as a partner country may open the door for stronger economic ties and increased influence on global development discussions.
