The Imo State Police Command has apprehended two men in connection with the brutal rape and murder of Wenda Achumba, a 21-year-old post-basic nursing student whose lifeless body was discovered at her private off-campus residence in Umuadara, Umulogho, in Obowo Local Government Area of the state.
The arrests, which have sent shockwaves across the tight-knit community and drawn widespread attention to the safety of students living alone, mark a significant breakthrough in what authorities described as a swift but methodical investigation.
The two men taken into custody have been identified as “Onyema Okonkwo”, 32, and “Emmanuel Onyekachi”, 25 both indigenes of Umuadara, Umulogho, the very same community where the victim was found dead.
The proximity of the suspects to the crime scene raises disturbing questions about the vulnerability of young women studying far from home.
According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Henry Okoye, preliminary investigations have already established a link between the two men and the heinous act, with one of the suspects reportedly confessing to the crime during questioning.
Wenda Achumba was not merely a statistic. She was a young woman with a future, a dedicated student enrolled at “Mercy College of Nursing Science, Umulogho”, where she was pursuing a post-basic nursing qualification.
Like countless students before her, she had chosen to live independently in off-campus accommodation, a decision that, tragically, may have left her exposed to danger in her final hours.
The circumstances surrounding her death remain deeply unsettling. She was reportedly found dead inside her private residence, a discovery that, by all accounts, has left her family, classmates, and the wider academic community reeling with grief and outrage.
SP Okoye confirmed that the arrests followed sustained intelligence-led investigations conducted in close collaboration with community stakeholders. In communities where trust in law enforcement can sometimes run thin, the cooperation between police and locals in this instance proved decisive.
The two suspects have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), where detectives are expected to conduct deeper forensic and circumstantial analysis ahead of possible prosecution.
Commissioner of Police, CP Audu Garba Bosso, has personally assured the people of Imo State that the command will leave no stone unturned in ensuring justice is served for Wenda and her grieving family.
His intervention reflects the gravity with which the command is treating the case — one that has inevitably reignited public debate about the safety of female students and the need for more robust protective measures in off-campus residential areas across the state.
This tragic incident is the latest in a troubling pattern of violence against young women in Nigeria, and rights groups are likely to call on both state authorities and university administrators to urgently review student safety protocols.
The fact that Wenda was found dead in her own home , a place that should have been her sanctuary, lends the case a particular, chilling resonance.
The Imo State Police Command has urged anyone with additional information related to this case to contact the nearest police station or reach out to the command directly.
Further updates are expected as investigations progress.
