The Super Falcons of Nigeria sealed their place in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a dramatic 2-1 victory over reigning champions South Africa on Tuesday in Morocco, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from defender Michelle Alozie.
In a clash worthy of its billing, Nigeria and South Africa—two of Africa’s football powerhouses—delivered a tense semifinal encounter that appeared to be heading for extra time until Alozie’s long-range effort in the 94th minute caught the Banyana Banyana defence and goalkeeper off guard, sailing into the net to spark wild celebrations among the Nigerian contingent.
The match began with Nigeria asserting early dominance, coming close on several occasions but were kept at bay by a resilient South African defence and a goal-line clearance. The breakthrough came in the 44th minute after a handball in the box from a South African defender. Nigerian captain Rasheedat Ajibade stepped up and coolly converted the penalty, giving the Falcons a 1–0 lead going into the break.
South Africa responded after halftime with renewed intensity and were rewarded in the 56th minute when Osinachi Ohale was penalized for dragging down a South African attacker in the box. Linda Motlhalo made no mistake from the spot, levelling the match at 1–1.
Both sides pushed for a winner with a series of substitutions made by the two coaches. Just as extra time seemed inevitable, Nigeria found the decisive goal. A long ball from Esther Okoronkwo found Michelle Alozie, whose speculative strike found the back of the net, breaking South African hearts and sending Nigeria into the final.
With this victory, the Super Falcons remain on course to secure a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. They will face the winner of the other semifinal between host nation Morocco and regional rivals Ghana.
