South Africa edged Nigeria’s Flying Eagles 1-0 in a tense semi-final at the Suez Canal Stadium on Thursday to secure a spot in the CAF U‑20 Africa Cup of Nations final in Egypt.

A pinpoint header from Tylon Smith in the 66th minute proved decisive in a fiercely contested encounter between two of Africa’s traditional football heavyweights.

Despite Nigeria dominating much of the second half, they were undone by missed chances and a series of superb saves from South African goalkeeper Fletcher Lowe, who denied Emmanuel Chukwu and Israel Ayuma in the closing stages.

The match began cautiously, with early efforts from Nigeria’s Tahir Maigana and South Africa’s Kutlwano Letlhaku both kept out, leaving the first half goalless.

The breakthrough arrived just after the hour mark when Neo Rapoo delivered a right‑wing corner that Smith met with a powerful header into the centre of the net—his first goal of the tournament and arguably its most crucial.

Nigeria responded immediately, introducing Rickson Mendos and Bidemi Amole in the 65th minute to add pace and urgency, but their late surges were repelled by South Africa’s compact defence and disciplined midfield.

By seeing out the remainder of the match, South Africa extended their unbeaten run at the Suez Canal Stadium to four games and booked their first U‑20 AFCON final appearance since 1997, when they finished as runners-up.

For the Flying Eagles, the defeat marks a third straight semi-final exit following losses to Gambia in 2023 and Mali in 2019.

What you should know
South Africa’s victory ends Nigeria’s bid for a record eighth U‑20 AFCON crown and highlights the fine margins at youth level, where decisive moments and goalkeeping heroics often determine outcomes.

Tylon Smith’s decisive header not only propelled the Amajita into their first final in over 25 years but also underscored the country’s resurgence at this age group.
