Lionel Messi has officially retired from international football, closing the book on a 20-year career with the Argentine national team that redefined what one player could mean to a nation.

The announcement came via a heartfelt Instagram post on Monday, more than a month after Messi’s final appearance for Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final, a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain that denied him back-to-back World Cup titles.

The 39-year-old, who made his Argentina debut in 2005, leaves as the country’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, finishing with 207 appearances and 125 goals across a career spanning more than two decades.

Messi

In his post, which included a photograph of a handwritten notebook entry, Messi revealed the letter was originally written on July 21st, two days after the World Cup final.

He explained that the decision was compounded by personal tragedy: his father and longtime manager, Jorge Messi, died on August 8th at a hospital in Rosario, Argentina, at the age of 68, and Messi added that the loss left him “even more convinced than before” of his decision to step away.

Describing the emotional weight of the choice, Messi wrote that it was a decision that “hurt and still hurts deep inside,” but that he understood “this is the right moment.” He thanked the fans and teammates who accompanied him on the journey, saying he leaves with pride at having given supporters “moments we once only dreamed of.”

Messi’s international legacy is difficult to overstate. He captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar in 2022, ending the country’s 36-year wait for the title, and also played a central role in ending a 28-year trophy drought by winning the 2021 Copa América before winning it again in 2024.

This year’s World Cup run added a runner-up finish to his résumé, his third time reaching a final with Argentina, alongside 2014 and 2026.

Notably, this isn’t the first time Messi has walked away from the national team. He previously announced his international retirement in 2016 after Argentina lost three consecutive finals, only to reverse course and go on to deliver the country’s long-awaited World Cup triumph six years later.

With his boots now hung up for Argentina, Messi is expected to continue his club career with Inter Miami, where he has played since leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

But for the Albiceleste faithful, Monday marks the definitive end of an era, the departure of a player many consider the greatest to ever wear the sky blue and white.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Messi’s Argentina career is over 207 caps, 125 goals, a World Cup title in 2022, and a heartbreaking final defeat in 2026 to close it out. The real story behind the timing, though, is personal: he’d already decided to retire right after the World Cup final but held off announcing it out of grief following his father Jorge’s death in August.

It’s less a football decision than a human one: a son honoring his father before saying goodbye to the game that defined them both.
