Manchester City have added fresh firepower to the flanks, confirming the signing of Brazilian winger Allan Elias from Palmeiras in a deal worth up to £34.2 million ($46 million), the Premier League leaders announced on Monday.
The 22-year-old has signed a five-year contract, with City understood to have paid an initial £32 million plus a further £2.2 million in performance-related add-ons, comfortably clearing the fee, in dollar terms, that first vaulted a young Brazilian from Palmeiras to City nearly a decade ago when Gabriel Jesus made the same move.
Allan arrives as a product of Palmeiras’ famed academy system, having progressed through the club’s youth ranks before establishing himself in the first team.
In 96 appearances across all competitions for the Brazilian outfit, he racked up nine goals and 12 assists output that included four goals and three assists in 21 league matches this season, as Palmeiras sit top of Brazil’s Série A.
The transfer effectively slots Allan into the void left by fellow Brazilian Savio, who completed a £75 million move to Tottenham Hotspur last week. Reports suggest the newcomer, primarily a right-sided attacker, is likely to be eased into Enzo Maresca’s squad initially in a rotational role rather than as an immediate first-choice starter.
Speaking after the move was finalized, Allan did not hide his excitement. He called his transfer “surreal” and described Manchester City as one of the most attractive clubs in the world for players given what they’ve won over the past decade and a half.
He added that joining marked the proudest moment of his career to date, while making clear his affection for Palmeiras remains undiminished even as he called the decision to leave an easy one.
The winger also struck a tone of ambition and humility, pledging to earn his place in the side through hard work rather than assume it, and stating plainly that his goal now is to help City keep collecting silverware.
Allan’s arrival is the latest piece in what has been a busy and expensive summer rebuild at the Etihad. City have now spent more than £230 million this window, with midfielder Elliot Anderson arriving from Nottingham Forest for £116 million and Ayyoub Bouaddi joining from Lille for £85.6 million.
The club has partially offset that outlay with over £286 million in sales, including World Cup Golden Ball winner Rodri’s £65 million exit to Barcelona and Tijani Reijnders’ £52 million move to Al-Qadsiah. City are also reportedly in talks with Liverpool over Dutch forward Cody Gakpo and have registered interest in Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández.
For now, though, the spotlight belongs to Allan, a player with no senior or youth international caps for Brazil, arriving in the Premier League as one of the tournament’s more understated but promising newcomers and stepping straight into a title-chasing squad that opened the season with wins over Bournemouth and Crystal Palace.
