Rafael Leão’s seven-year spell at AC Milan has ended. The Portuguese international arrived in Istanbul over the weekend to finalize his move to Galatasaray, closing a turbulent final chapter at San Siro and handing the Turkish champions a marquee summer signing.

Sources indicated the Turkish club had agreed to a fee of around €45 million ($52 million), with the total package, including add-ons, potentially climbing toward €47–50 million.

Reports suggested the structure included roughly €43 million paid upfront plus €2 million in performance-based add-ons, with Milan retaining a 20 percent sell-on clause on any future sale. On personal terms, Leão is believed to have accepted an offer worth more than €12 million net annually, on a four-year contract.

The transfer represents a significant return on investment for Milan, which originally signed Leão from French club Lille in 2019 for roughly €49.5 million, a fee that, remarkably, is now close to what Milan will recoup on his exit.

Leão’s Milan career was far from ordinary. Over 291 appearances, the winger scored 80 goals and contributed 65 assists, establishing himself as a key figure during Milan’s Serie A title-winning campaign in 2021-22.

Yet his final season told a more uneven story: Leão managed 10 goals in 31 matches as Milan finished fifth in Serie A, only good enough for a Europa League place, a marked step down for a club and player once seen as ascendant together.

Part of that decline has been attributed to positional misuse. Under former coach Massimiliano Allegri, Leão was frequently deployed as a central striker rather than in his favored wide role, a tactical shift that dulled the explosive dribbling and one-on-one threat that made him one of Serie A’s most feared attackers at his peak.

Galatasaray did not have a clear run at Leão. Aston Villa pushed hard for the player, with manager Unai Emery making direct contact and the Premier League club exploring a loan-with-obligation-to-buy structure.

Villa reportedly floated a verbal package worth €7.5 million per year but never formalized a bid, and the terms ultimately fell short of what Galatasaray was prepared to offer.

A compatriot’s influence was also at play. Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen is said to have personally reached out to Leão, encouraging him to join the project in Istanbul and dangling the prospect of playing alongside one another next season.

For Okan Buruk’s side, the timing lines up neatly with squad needs. Galatasaray had been searching for a new wide attacking option after Noa Lang’s loan from Napoli expired, and Leão’s ability to operate on either flank or centrally makes him a natural fit for that vacancy.

The move arrives as the club prepares to defend its Süper Lig crown after winning a fourth consecutive title, its 26th overall, while also targeting a deeper Champions League run.

Leão’s introduction to the fanbase came familiarly: a video posted to Galatasaray’s social media channels showed the winger aboard a plane wearing a club scarf, telling supporters he was looking forward to meeting them.

The move is not yet formally completed; Leão is still required to pass a medical examination, with final contractual details being ironed out.

Once signed, it will mark the definitive end of an association that began when Leão came through Sporting CP’s academy before a move to Lille caught Milan’s attention and will close out seven seasons at San Siro, during which he earned 49 caps for Portugal, including a place in all five of Portugal’s matches at the 2026 World Cup.

For Milan, the sale offers a financial reset, as one report put it, to provide funds to reshape the squad after a disappointing campaign. For Leão, it’s a fresh start in a league growing increasingly used to attracting Europe’s recognizable names.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Rafael Leão’s move from AC Milan to Galatasaray, worth roughly €45 million, closes a seven-year chapter marked by a Serie A title in 2021-22 but a steep decline in form and role clarity under Milan’s recent management.

Leão chose ambition and a clearer wide-attacking role at Galatasaray over a tempting but unformalized offer from Aston Villa, a decision shaped as much by tactical fit and project vision as by money.
