Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has defended the Federal Government’s programme for women running small businesses, saying it is not limited to akara sellers as many people have claimed on social media.

She spoke on Monday in Hadejia, Jigawa State, during the inauguration of the newly built Abubakar Maje Haruna Hall at the palace of the Emir of Hadejia.

Her comments came after her earlier remarks about supporting akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli sellers drew criticism from many Nigerians, who said the government was not paying enough attention to the country’s economic difficulties.

Responding to the reactions, the First Lady said the empowerment programme covers many categories of petty traders, including those who sell tomatoes, pepper, vegetables, roasted plantain and other items in local markets.

She explained that the goal is to help women increase their business capital, keep their businesses running and improve their income.

Tinubu disclosed that the Federal Government had provided ₦100 million to the Jigawa State Government to support 2,000 women engaged in small businesses. According to her, each beneficiary will receive ₦50,000 to strengthen and expand her business.

She said the government would continue to support women traders despite criticism, adding that many of those benefiting from the programme appreciate the assistance they have received.

She also stated that reports suggesting the intervention is meant only for akara sellers are false and would not stop the government from carrying on with the initiative.

The First Lady said improving the financial strength of women remains one of the ways to reduce poverty, increase family income and improve living conditions in communities across the country.

She also spoke about Nigeria’s natural wealth, saying the country has many resources that are yet to be fully developed.

She recalled seeing a large orange orchard during a visit to Benue State and urged young Nigerians to look beyond crude oil by taking advantage of other opportunities available across the country.

Tinubu said President Bola Tinubu’s administration would continue introducing programmes aimed at improving the welfare of citizens, especially women and other vulnerable groups.

She added that national development requires the efforts of all Nigerians.
