In a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), leading a bloc of loyalists in a move that signals deepening cracks within Nigeria’s opposition politics.

Verily News reports that the governor announced his defection on Saturday at the Bauchi Government House. He was joined by the APM National Chairman, Yusuf Dantalle, alongside top government officials and party stakeholders.

The announcement followed a closed-door stakeholders’ meeting and highlights growing divisions within the PDP structure in Bauchi State, particularly among supporters aligned with the faction previously linked to the party’s internal leadership crisis.

“After extensive consultations, we have taken a firm and strategic decision to join the Allied Peoples Movement, (APM),” Mohammed declared, describing the move as a carefully considered political strategy ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The 67-year-old governor explained that the decision was driven by the need to secure a politically viable platform capable of consolidating support and ensuring electoral competitiveness.

“With the 2027 elections approaching, we cannot afford to leave our people without a credible and effective political platform,” he said.

“Our objective is clear, to provide leadership, energy, and a coherent alternative that can win and continue to serve our people with integrity.”

The defection marks a significant turning point for Mohammed, who had until now served as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, placing him at the centre of the party’s national leadership structure.

Although he officially severed ties with the PDP, the governor acknowledged the role the opposition party played in his political journey since emerging victorious in the 2019 governorship election.

“The PDP has played an important role in our political journey. We remain grateful for the opportunities it provided,” he said.

However, his comments also made clear that his political camp has chosen a new path amid uncertainty surrounding the opposition party’s future direction.

Political observers say the development could trigger wider realignments within Bauchi and beyond, particularly as parties intensify strategic positioning ahead of the 2027 polls.

With Mohammed now establishing his structure within the APM, attention will shift to whether other prominent PDP stakeholders and loyalists across the state will follow suit.

The move is already being viewed as one of the most significant opposition defections in recent months, with the potential to reshape Bauchi’s political landscape and alter broader coalition dynamics ahead of the next election cycle.

What You Should Know

Governor Bala Mohammed’s defection from the PDP to the APM marks a major political shake-up ahead of the 2027 elections.

As a sitting governor and former chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, his exit weakens the opposition party’s structure in Bauchi and could trigger further defections. The move reflects broader tensions within Nigeria’s opposition bloc following internal leadership disputes.

Political analysts believe his switch may reposition the APM as a stronger contender in Bauchi while intensifying efforts by rival parties to consolidate support ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive electoral contest.
