Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has restated that the ongoing conversations surrounding the conviction and efforts to secure the release of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, will ultimately be settled through administrative channels.

Otti gave the reassurance after meeting with the IPOB leader at the Sokoto Correctional Centre over the weekend. He explained that he had intensified efforts toward Kanu’s release, a process he began immediately after assuming office in 2023.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Governor was said to have held meaningful discussions with Kanu during the visit.

According to the statement, “Governor Otti, while discussing with Mazi Kanu during the visit, encouraged him to remain strong, assuring him that the engagements he started over two years ago, which the IPOB leader has been aware of, have been intensified in spite of what happened.”

The statement added, “The Governor enjoined Kanu to remain calm but strong, assuring that the issue will be resolved administratively and that he, Mazi Kanu, will regain his freedom.”

The Governor expressed delight that the Sultan of Sokoto also shares his view regarding the need for Kanu’s release and the lowering of tensions. Otti told the IPOB leader that the Sultan had jokingly remarked that Kanu was now his subject and that he intended to turban him, a comment that sparked laughter from Kanu.

Kanu, in his response, praised the Governor for his consistent show of support and concern.

“Kanu, who was beaming with smiles and in high spirits, thanked Governor Otti for the visit and stated that he wasn’t surprised that the Governor quickly came visiting, because he had done the same thing in the past.”

He also commended Otti for his development achievements in Abia, drawing parallels between his work and the legacy of the late Sam Mbakwe of the Old Imo State.

According to the statement, Kanu noted that he was proud of the progress being made in the state, based on reports reaching him, and urged the Governor to remain committed to serving the people. He added that he was only concerned with good governance and anything that could improve the wellbeing of the population, offering prayers for the Governor and his team.
