The state of North Carolina has formally recognized June 14, 2025, as ‘Igbo Day’, honouring the Nigerian ethnic group for their impactful contributions to the state’s cultural, economic, and civic fabric.
The declaration was made by Governor Josh Stein through an official proclamation issued on June 12 and published via the state government’s website.
Governor Stein praised the Igbo community for over fifty years of enriching presence and achievements in North Carolina, spanning across key sectors such as education, law, medicine, entrepreneurship, information technology, and public service at both the state and federal levels.
In his words, “Through their collective efforts, the Igbo community aims to inspire future generations to embrace their identity and to foster a strong sense of belonging and purpose within North Carolina.”
The proclamation emphasized that the vision of the Igbo people in North Carolina goes beyond mere cultural celebration—it is about community-building and serving as a unifying force.
The governor applauded their active participation in civic life, including efforts such as adopting a highway for beautification, contributing to food drives, supporting women’s shelters and hospitals, and showcasing traditional performances at various festivals across the state.
“Igbos in North Carolina are dedicated to ensuring the sustainability of Igbo culture by creating cultural awareness for future generations,” Stein noted, adding that their involvement in charitable causes and election participation further demonstrates their deep integration into the social and economic life of the state.
Highlighting the establishment of the Igbo Day Festival Organisation in 2022—a nonprofit founded to promote Igbo music, art, and traditions—Stein recognized the group’s efforts in hosting the inaugural Igbo Day Festival in July 2022, which has since become a cultural mainstay.
With the official declaration, Governor Stein formally stated:
“Now, Therefore, I, Josh Stein, Governor of the State of North Carolina, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2025, as ‘Igbo Day’ in North Carolina, and commend its observance to all citizens.”
This recognition positions North Carolina alongside Minnesota, which made a similar declaration in 2022 by designating August 13 as Igbo Day, underscoring a growing appreciation for the influence of Nigerian communities across the United States.
