Liverpool have completed the headline signing of German international Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a high-profile move that is already being hailed as one of the most significant transfer deals in Premier League history.

The long-anticipated transfer was finalized on Friday, with reports indicating that the deal could set a new British record, underscoring the club’s ambitions to build on last season’s domestic triumph.

Initial reports in England suggest the Anfield outfit will pay an upfront fee of £100 million ($134 million), already exceeding their previous most expensive transfer. However, that figure could climb even higher with performance-related bonuses, reportedly reaching an additional £16 million.

Meanwhile, German sources believe the numbers are even steeper, claiming the starting fee stands at €130 million (£111 million or $149 million), with potential add-ons pushing the total to €150 million.

Widely regarded as one of the brightest stars in European football, Wirtz has been lauded by many, including former Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso—himself a Liverpool legend and now the manager of Real Madrid—who previously called him one of the “best in the world.”

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder is joining Liverpool fresh off an exceptional season in which he helped Bayer Leverkusen clinch their first-ever Bundesliga title and a German Cup win, completing a domestic double in 2023/24. The team’s only defeat came in the Europa League final against Atalanta, where they narrowly missed out on an unprecedented treble.

Speaking to Liverpool’s official media, Wirtz expressed his excitement at embarking on a new chapter outside the Bundesliga. “I’m really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League,” he said. “In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”

His move comes as part of a broader reshuffle at Leverkusen, who are seeing several top players exit after their record-breaking campaign. Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong has already completed his switch to Liverpool earlier in the summer, and Wirtz now follows in what is becoming a significant talent pipeline between the two clubs.

Liverpool’s aggressive transfer activity this summer signals a clear intent under manager Arne Slot, who is looking to stamp his authority in his second season at the helm. After a relatively quiet window last year, the Reds are making bold moves to reinforce a squad that secured a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title.

Alongside Wirtz and Frimpong, the Merseyside club is close to sealing a £40 million deal for Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez. The club is also reportedly exploring further acquisitions, with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi both on their radar.

However, Wirtz’s exact role in Slot’s system is yet to be determined. During his time at Leverkusen, he often operated just behind the central striker but has also been deployed out wide for the German national team. His versatility, coupled with his impressive record of 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 appearances, ensures that he brings both creativity and goal-scoring prowess to Liverpool’s already stacked frontline.

With Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, and Cody Gakpo already capable of delivering goals and assists, the addition of Wirtz increases competition for attacking places. As a result, players like Diogo Jota, Darwin Nunez, and Federico Chiesa could find their roles under threat, with speculation growing that one or more of them may be moved on to create financial room for further signings.

Wirtz’s arrival not only symbolizes Liverpool’s determination to remain competitive on all fronts but also reaffirms their commitment to investing in world-class talent capable of shaping the club’s future success.

What You Should Know

  • Record-Breaking Fee: Liverpool signed Florian Wirtz for £100 million plus £16 million in add-ons, potentially a British record; German reports suggest up to €150 million.
  • Wirtz’s Pedigree: The 22-year-old was Bundesliga Player of the Year in 2023-24, with 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 Leverkusen games, and is praised by Xabi Alonso as world-class.
  • Liverpool’s Ambition: The Premier League champions, under Arne Slot, are bolstering their squad, having also signed Jeremie Frimpong and targeting Milos Kerkez, Isak, and Guehi.
  • Tactical Fit: Wirtz’s versatility as a No. 10 or winger adds depth to Liverpool’s attack, but may lead to sales of Jota, Núñez, or Chiesa to balance the squad.
  • Financial Backing: Liverpool’s record revenues (£600m+ in 2023-24, projected £700m+ in 2024-25) and frugal prior spending support the massive investment.
  • Fan Sentiment: X posts show enthusiasm for Wirtz’s arrival, with some debate over the fee but optimism about his impact under Slot.
